The author of the best-selling Emily Windsnap series spins a gripping tale about a girl who stumbles into the future--and must change its course to save a friendship.

Jenni Green’s family vacation has finally arrived! Even though she has to deal with her annoying little brother, her slightly overbearing dad, and her very pregnant mom, she gets to spend a week with her bestest friend in the world, Autumn. But twelve-year-old Jenni’s world turns upside down when she takes an old elevator to visit Autumn and discovers that everything has changed: not only is her friend in a different condo, but tragedy has struck Autumn’s family, Jenni’s mother has had her baby, and everyone is a year older. When Jenni realizes that the elevator caused her to skip a whole year, she tries to go back, but soon finds that fixing things won’t be as easy as pressing a button. How can she alter the past and keep her family and Autumn’s from falling apart? With honesty and insight, Liz Kessler explores how the bonds of family and friendship can endure through time.

About the Author

Liz Kessler is the author of the New York Times best-selling series about the half-mermaid Emily Windsnap, as well as three novels about Philippa Fisher and her fairy godsister. Liz Kessler lives in Cornwall, England

When Liz was quite young (about eight) she wanted to be a poet. She grew up and did lots of other things, but then in 1999 she suddenly realized she wanted to write a book. She says, “It was as though I’d remembered what I’d always wanted to do, and I’ve never looked back.”

About mermaids, she says, “I am fascinated by the sea and all the mysteries of the ocean. It’s so huge and there is so much of it that we haven’t discovered and know nothing about. To me, mermaids represent the possibilities of what might just exist, on the edges of our imaginations and our world.”

Liz recently spent a year traveling around Europe in a camper van with her best friend and her dog, Poppy. She lives in England.

This book is great, but at times a little suspenseful and heavy, but overall its great and ou can really feel the haracter emotions and empathize with them great book. some said they would recommend for 3rd through 5th graders, but I would recommend it for girls 10 to 15 or even older because even though the characters are 12 age doesnt play a big part in this book. I was freaking out every time she had issues with the elevator! spoiler warning and when she went up to the highest level and there was no elevator I was so so scared I was freaking out and sweating! its great overall haha sorry I said great so many times

I read this book in 6th grade, but it has stuck with me ever since. I'm so glad I found it and I look forward to rereading it! I would recomend it to anyone in the middleschool age range, though I think teens/adults could enjoy this easy read as well.

Jenni Green has a perfectly normal life with punctual parents, an annoying younger brother and a FABULOUS best friend. She has no idea how much her life is about to change. It all starts when she goes to visit Autumn, her best friend, in her condo. Add an old elevator, mysteriously working, time travel, tragedy and of course: "a HAPPY ending" and there you have it. The result: A year without Autumn.

My daughters (and students) are big fans of Kessler's Emily Windsnap series so I was excited to check out her newest offering . . . I must admit that at first I was not exactly enamored of the story or the characters. 12 year old Jenni came off as wimpy and annoying; her best friend Autumn bossy and even a little mean. But then I got to the time travel part and things started getting good. By the last chapter, I was on the edge of my seat, heart pounding, to find out what was going to happen. I'd like to say more, but don't want to spoil the suspense for potential readers. I will just add that I really liked this book and recommend it to 4th - 6th grade girls.

Its alright. A little sad how they make the brother go into a coma. I literally felt so shocked when Autumn said te would have to "Pull the plug" on her brother, it shocked me:p Depressing and might hurt your brain when no one will listen to Jenni.
