Overview

As a boy he preferred reading sea stories to doing homework and, at age 16, became an apprentice seaman. Subsequently, Ernest Shackleton’s incredible journeys to the South Pole in the early 1900s made him one of the most famous explorers of modern times.  His courage in the face of dangerous conditions and unforeseeable tragedies reveal the great leader that he was. His historic 1914 journey aboard the Endurance has all the drama of an action movie.

Cuteness, aside… Wow, was Ernest Shackleton really such a babe? Kidding. I just got this book for my grandson because he has been learning about Arctic exploration in school. The illustrations are great! And although I started this review with a joke, I would venture that a man of his heroic proportions would indeed have attractive qualities. (Life in the arctic has a unique culture of its own which I enjoyed learning about in the book Arctic Adventure.) You and your child will enjoy reading this book, Who Was Ernest Shackleton, for its generous details, entertaining anecdotes, and light language.
