PreS-Gr 1 Superb color photography plus a simple yet engaging text grace this excellent swamp book. In an early morning setting, Hirschi follows the activities of animals (rabbit, alligator, and bobcat) and birds (13 of them, including heron, egrets, oriole, and gallinule) of the swamp. The large-type text, in clear and direct language, identifies each creature. From title to text, a questioning format invites young readers to enter this world. An afterward details the habitats of the alligator in the U.S. Cortesi's Explore a Spooky Swamp (National Geographic, 1978), for a slightly older age range, covers similar territory but includes a few more creatures. While Hirschi's text does little more than identify swamp creatures, it is sure to inspire an appreciation for wildlife and conservation in the very young.
