"A small child imagines a future when he will be old with his Granddaddy and will sit beside him in a rocking chair and talk about everything...The poignant reality that time will never allow these two to coexist at the same age is softened by the fact that they do not have to be the same age in order to share happy times...The African American child and grandfather are...recognizable to anyone who has ever shared the bond of family love across generations." - School Library Journal, starred review

This is a wonderful book! I bought it after it appeared as a suggested book to read in one of my school-aged kids' reading papers. I bought it sight unseen and pages unread and could not be more pleased! It has wonderful pictures and is a great story about a boy and his love of spending time with his grandfather. My one year old loves to listen to me read this book to her! Praises all the way!

A granddaughter relates to her grandfather all the things she will do with him when she is older. She doesn't realize that she is already doing all of these things as she spends time with him. What a lovely relationship!

This book makes you think of your own grandfather and your walks, talks, and outings.

This picture story book is about a girl who discusses doing activities with her grandfather when she is older. The text continually begins with "When I am Old with you grandaddy", which may be helpful for younger readers because of the repetition in the story. The story has little to no plot, it is mostly a child listing the things she wants to do with her grandaddy. As far as the illustrations go, there is some synergy with the text because instead of showing her doing things with the grandfather when she is older, it shows her doing the activities with him now. This adds more to the text because it shows that when she is older she wants to do the same things with her grandfather as she is doing now. All of the illustrations, which are done in watercolor, have some detail, but not too much to overwhelm young readers. For example, on pages sixteen and seventeen, the illustration shows the emotions of the characters while they sit on the porch, something the little girl wants to do with her grandfather when she gets older. This illustration demonstrates the synergy represented in a number of the pictures.

This book is about a little boy who likes to do things with his granddaddy. He begins to think of the many things that he wants to do with his granddaddy when he gets older. He begins with them sitting in rocking chairs together and the book ends with them sitting in rocking chairs together enjoying all the things that they had done. This book was a little to repetitive and drawn out but it had good pictures. This book is a true multicultural book because the things that the child wanted to do were that of their culture. This book could be used in the classroom to talk about the different cultures of the many ethnic groups. The students could also read this book and compare their culture with their peer¿s cultures.

Beatiful story about the friendship between a little girl and her grandfather what they will do together when she gets to be the same age as him. Told with a child's perspective and innocence about life, the little girl lists all of the activities her grandfather enjoys and tells him how much she will enjoy doing them together when she gets to be the same age. Sweet and cute.
