Overview

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel.

What do you do when a sexy, older man moves into your family's summer rental?

Well, apparently, you make a fool of yourself—over and over. Things didn't exactly get off on the right foot with Noah Cavallari. Our first encounter was embarrassing, to say the least.

But despite that, I found myself waking up every day with a newfound energy. Nothing exciting ever happened on the lake—not until Noah moved into the small boathouse on our property. He'd booked it for the entire summer...and I was still trying to figure out why.

When my mother became ill, I inherited the responsibility of making sure our guests were well taken care of. I should have been finishing up college. Instead, I was living my best life...as a maid.

Dark, handsome, and mysterious, everything about Noah screamed forbidden.

I knew he was just passing through town for the summer.

I knew he was probably a little old for me.

Yet, I was drawn to him.

Not to mention, he tried to save my life when he mistakenly thought I was drowning.

I wanted him and made no secret of it.

His own attempts to warn me away soon gave way to late-night moonlight chats by the lake. We were slowly easing into a friendship that was gearing up to explode into something I might not recover from.

Because he's leaving at the end of the summer.

And I have no idea what I'll do when August ends.

This story just felt immature. I’m a huge fan of Ward, but this just didn’t hit the mark. And the age difference isn’t it. I don’t mind that at all. The character felt immature and the writing was very superficial.

The book was cute, but the writing wasn’t the greatest. Kind of felt like this; “and then, and then” it just wasn’t good. However, I still enjoyed it. Not too happy I paid for it though, oh well. 2.5 stars

When August Ends is a sweet and sexy, slow burn clash of fate. Heather is 20. She's a caretaker for her ill mother and helps with renting out the boathouse. She's vivacious and full of life. A spunky, mature, and independent young woman who puts other's needs before her own. Noah is mysterious, broody, sexy, confident with a sense humor and killer smile. He's also older. Noah rents the boathouse for the summer to escape. He never expects to be knocked over by Heather. Though the attraction between them is imminent, Noah is intrigued by Heather but he keeps his distance. Even when he continues to reject her, he can't seem to stay away. Yet, they form a friendship that soon turns into more. You'll fall in love with these two strangers as their connection is undeniable. Add in some cute guinea pigs and a big dog and you are bound to be entertained! Once again, Penelope Ward has written another hit. I'm in love with this woman's writing and am looking forward to more of her books!

When August Ends is a sexy, sad, funny, slow burn love story that will give you all the feels with a few surprises thrown in. I found myself laughing out loud and shedding a few tears while reading this one. Heather is young and has had to give up things that she wanted to do, because she puts her family and their needs first. You would think that she would be bitter, but she is not. She is optimistic, makes the best of a bad situation, and not afraid to speak her mind. Wise beyond her years, she is drawn to Noah from their very first embarrassing meeting. Noah is confident, sexy, and mysterious. He has rented the boathouse from Heather's family for the entire summer and even though he is drawn to Heather from the start, he puts his feelings on the back burner, trying to do what is best for her. I loved this book from the very first page. It is one of those books that you want to know what happens and at the same time you do not want it to end. I highly recommend this one, I bet you even fall in love with Teddy, Bonnie and Clyde. Five glowing stars for this one!!

Unlike other Penelope Ward books, this one took a little bit for me to get into it. I think the writing seemed a bit off...or just a bit different from her other works. The structure seemed to be trying to be a bit younger feeling to me...if that makes sense. But after a while, I was in total Penelope overload and not willing to put the book down. This was an entertaining story. It's been described as a friends to lovers troupe but I don't really agree with this description. Yes, Noah and Heather do become great friends, but that is not how their relationship started off. In fact, Heather is immediately drawn to Noah in a sexual nature during their first meeting. And she goes as far as to tell Noah. She does not beat around the bush but is very blatant at her attraction. I think it was this blatant behavior that I really liked in Heather's. character. Noah on the other hand tells Heather that he is not here to have a relationship with her. That his time is limited until the end of the summer. He even goes on to promise Heather's mother that he is not interested in a relationship with Heather...and she is skeptical. These are some interesting characters with a unique and interesting connection. But of course, you have to read 90% of the story before their connection is revealed...and I'm not about to spoil it here. In typical Penelope Ward fashion, readers are intrigued by her characters and their story and When August Ends doesn't fail to intrigue. A worthy read for any romance fan.

When August Ends was funny and entertaining. It also had a little bit of an emotional aspect to it. The way Noah and Heather meet and then see each other again was very funny! Noah isn't exactly the nicest guy at the start, but starts to change for the better because of his relationship with Heather. They are both good and caring people with big hearts. They may have an age gap, but they are quite similar to one another on the inside and fate seems to have brought them together. Their relationship is slow going, but I enjoyed how strong their relationship and connection is because of it. There were a lot of cute moments along the way plus a surprise or two.

“Life is made up of little moments that don’t seem that important at the time, but in retrospect they’re what get you to where you are.” Heather was a complete surprise. I’ll be completely honest here....the age difference between the H/h was on my mind constantly while reading. I kept thinking....How is Penelope going to do this? How is she going to make this work for me? I kid you not....I am absolutely 100% satisfied with the outcome most this book. Penelope wrote a young heroine that knew herself and her value. Heather is hard working, loving, smart, always willing to sacrifice for her family and she has awesome (to me) taste in music. She knew her feelings for Noah were on the epic scale and didn’t hold back. She went there. Multiple times. And Noah shot her down. Multiple times. Until he didn’t. Yes, Noah was absolutely freaked out over their age difference but eventually after a long long long summer of getting to know and becoming great friends with Heather he realized that he might have just met the love of his life in the least likely place. When August Ends was a beautiful slow burn romance that packed a serious dose of self discovery for all its characters. This book teaches you that life is made up of choices. Some are good and some....not so much. But in the end they are what teaches us our lessons and help shape who we are. Reviewed by: Heather S. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Solid 4 I’m going to be honest, I had a bit a rough go of trying to connect with Heather. So, I’m going to focus on Noah right now. I enjoyed Noah’s character; he seemed to want to do make things right from the past but didn’t realize what doing that would do for him. He knew what he wanted to do and was focused on that and tried really hard to not let others (or someone) stop him on his quest. Overall, the story was good, as for Heather, I had to picture her as different in order to make the story believable for me. Reviewed by: Dana D.

Noah & Heather's story was magical! I loved it all! Author Penelope Ward gives us another book couple to fall in love with. Noah & Heather's sexual tension was beautifully written in a built up that once released, had me deliciously sated. Sexy, funny & Author Penelope Ward's signature swoon factor touch of falling in love no matter the age difference, this book just gave it all and then some. I liked a lot that even with the 20 year age difference between Heather and Noah, this story was more about two people in love with one another & that is what matters in the heart. Age is just a number & this book is not just a book, it is a book YOU have to grab & read!

There's nothing like a story that makes you feel. Noah and Heather had me laughing out loud, gasping, sighing, and even shedding a few tears. There were times when I had butterflies in my stomach, and other times, it was tied in knots! From the very start, I was all in. Penelope Ward does such an amazing job humanizing her characters. You can't help but fall in love with them! The silly things they say and the quirky things they do, combined with all the passion and emotion, make it all so real. Full of humor, heat, and heart, When August Ends is everything I love in a romance read. I have read every single one of this authors stories, and I can't wait to read what she releases next! I highly recommend When August Ends as your next read! ♥ Review by Lys

Penelope Ward is one of my unicorn/ go to authors and just when I think I have seen her best she gives me yet another brilliant read and When August Ends is certainly that, it is a must read. This book has all the feels you want and expect in a great read, a slow burn with characters you will fall in love with, it will captivate you and keep you interested to the very last page. Noah and Heather stole a piece of my heart and I think if I’m totally honest I’m not going to get it back because their journey will be a story I will read over and over again. I loved Heather’s honestly, I loved how she had no control over blurting out exactly what’s on her mind and the friendship she shared with the man she had fallen for hook line and sinker. What can I say about Noah that hasn’t already been said before he is dark, mysterious and extremely handsome and boy oh boy did I swoon. Noah may have tried to warn Heather he was too old and wasn’t into relationships but sometimes friendships turn into so much more and love happens when we least expect it. This book has it all, secrets, lies, second chances as well as rejection but there is also plenty of moments that will leave you smiling so do yourself a favour and one click When August Ends.

Penelope Ward takes us in a rollercoaster ride of emotions with Noah and Heather's story. When August Ends is filled with laughter, drama and sexiness. I loved the twists and surprises, the crazy banter between Noah and Heather, how their relationship developed, the angst, the amazing characters, and the captivating plot. Penelope Ward did a phenomenal job with When August Ends! I love her writing style and she's the ability to suck the reader into the story and fall in love with the amazing characters she creates. I can't wait to read more from her!

Penelope Ward has done it again! Noah and Heather have a rough start to their relationship - the way they first met, the botched events that started with the best intentions, and Heather throwing herself at Noah didn't help things become easier. But when they find a happy middle ground for their friendship, it flourishes. Watching as they try to find their way to each other is sometimes funny, sometimes sweet, and sometimes scary. Definitely a must read, and an amazing journey into their lives.

An emotional and heartfelt story that takes the reader on a journey! I am super happy that Penelope wrote a story that involves an age gap between the Hero and heroine. I loved the slow burn between Noah and Heather. Penelope always takes us on a journey in her stories and this one focuses a lot on not letting life pass you by. Heather was very refreshing, young in age but mature in soul. She's put her own dreams on hold to take care of her mother. When she sees the man who has rented their boathouse for the summer, she feels something for him she's never felt towards anyone before. But Noah quickly makes it clear, nothing is going to happen between them, no matter how many advances Heather makes. I really enjoyed the journey Heather and Noah take together. Spending the summer together, fixing up the property so that Heather can put it on the market to sell. These two grew together as friends, learning many lessons from each other along the way. Initially, I was a little put off with how rude Noah came across to Heather with his abruptness and gruffness, but he grew on me over time and by the end of the story I was pretty enamored with him. There are plenty of emotions in this book, and like the slow burn between Heather and Noah, the emotions built to a crescendo for me up until the very end. With everything that Heather and Noah are dealing with, separately and together, my heart was stretched tight for them, and then Penelope lovingly molded it back into shape and left me with a happy, goofy smile on my face. Fans of Penelope's stories are going to fall hard for Noah and want to be besties with Heather.

WHEN AUGUST ENDS by Penelope Ward is a contemporary, adult stand alone, erotic romance story line focusing on twenty year old, waitress/college student Heather Chadwick. and thirty-four year old photographer Noah Cavallari. Coming face to face with Heather Chadwick, the owner’s twenty year old daughter, stirred something in Noah he had no business pursuing. Heather Chadwick’s attraction to, and seduction of Noah is met with refusal and rejection, but a last minute date for Heather forces Noah to look deep to understand from where his jealousy and need had come. What ensues is the slow building relationship and romance between Heather and Noah, and the potential fall-out as Noah keeps secret his real reason for coming to New Hampshire as his time in the lake house comes to a close. We are introduced to Heather’s mother Alice, and her estranged father Rick Chadwick, as well as friends Chrissy , and ex-boyfriend Eric; Noah’s ex Olivia, and his father Neil Cavallari. WHEN AUGUST ENDS is a story of older man / younger woman, secrets, lies, guilt and second chances. The premise is engaging and intriguing ;the romance is a slow burn rejection and attraction; the characters are colorful and energetic. WHEN AUGUST ENDS is a sexy, character driven story of love .
