What a delight! Written in a voice that speaks to teens, this book encourages, challenges, exhorts and teaches in a simple, easy-to-understand way. "Whatever is Lovely"pulls no punches, and yet presents scripture in a real way, using practical examples of how to apply Philippians 4:8 in your daily life. I found it direct and gentle and I highly recommend one for each of the teen girls in your life.

Allia Zobel Nolan’s Whatever is Lovely, a 90-Day Devotional Journal, is a breath of fresh air for preteens and teens who face a barrage choices on any given day from music videos, peer pressure and social media. Of course family and faith build the foundation to help young girls make wise choices but we all know external influences abound. Thankfully, Whatever is Lovely is a perfect counterbalance giving young girls a choice, an alternate path based on scripture, to foil the negativity that society throws out. This is an updated version, previously published as Faithgirlz! Whatever, and the new interior color, bookmark and journal space only make the message better. I gave the original to my niece when she first entered high school and faced some turbulent times—high school can be brutal. She followed the devotional rather than following some sketchy kids, and coming into her own, she became a leader in her school, church and community. Now she is a freshman in college and I see her making clear, sound choices for her future, I believe Whatever is Lovely had a part in her life…well, I know it did because her grandmother told me the two of them discussed the book. Now, her younger sister is in the junction between middle school and high school facing the same social pressures and I think the timing is perfect for her own copy of Whatever is Lovely. Oh, and it has positive influence on us who are older than teens also. Last week I snapped a ‘whatever’ out of frustration back to my husband. I immediately caught myself and realized I can do better than that. The message truly radiates: “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

This came at the right time because I was looking for a new Bible study to do to start the year. When I started reading it, I noticed that this is a book mostly focused for the teenage girl. However, as a 30-something woman, I often find that these seem to speak to me better than a lot of the other Bible Studies out there. This was no different. The devotionals are short but informative enough to really grasp the concept and the verse for that day. I also like the journal entries. I received the e-book version, so it took a little longer for me to enter my entries because I had to type everything on a tablet (fun fun...). It's a nice keep sake though, if I ever decide to do it again. Doing a paperback journal, if you write in it, you sometimes run out of room. However, with a digital version, you can date your entry, and just keep adding on for all the times that you decide you want to complete the devotional. It's nice to see how you've grown from the previous time(s) you completed it.
