What Happened by Hillary Rodham Clinton

“In the past, for reasons I try to explain, I’ve often felt I had to be careful in public, like I was up on a wire without a net. Now I’m letting my guard down.” —Hillary Rodham Clinton, from the introduction of What Happened

For the first time, Hillary Rodham Clinton reveals what she was thinking and feeling during one of the most controversial and unpredictable presidential elections in history. Now free from the constraints of running, Hillary takes you inside the intense personal experience of becoming the first woman nominated for president by a major party in an election marked by rage, sexism, exhilarating highs and infuriating lows, stranger-than-fiction twists, Russian interference, and an opponent who broke all the rules. This is her most personal memoir yet.

In these pages, she describes what it was like to run against Donald Trump, the mistakes she made, how she has coped with a shocking and devastating loss, and how she found the strength to pick herself back up afterward. With humor and candor, she tells readers what it took to get back on her feet—the rituals, relationships, and reading that got her through, and what the experience has taught her about life. She speaks about the challenges of being a strong woman in the public eye, the criticism over her voice, age, and appearance, and the double standard confronting women in politics.

She lays out how the 2016 election was marked by an unprecedented assault on our democracy by a foreign adversary. By analyzing the evidence and connecting the dots, Hillary shows just how dangerous the forces are that shaped the outcome, and why Americans need to understand them to protect our values and our democracy in the future.

The election of 2016 was unprecedented and historic. What Happened is the story of that campaign and its aftermath—both a deeply intimate account and a cautionary tale for the nation.

I actually read this book trying to find a way to like this person despite all that your read and hear about her. I mean, no one can be truly as bad as how they are depicted by the MSM, right? I wanted to feel bad for her as she truly portrayed herself as someone who cared about so many issues that face our country despite hearing she was in this race because she DESERVED to be President. I wanted so badly to find an ounce of humanity in her....Well, I didn't. After reading this book and trying to fairly give her a shot, I am at a loss. She took "cheap shots" at just about anyone she felt was a fair target. She truly depicts herself as better than others and her words drip with condescending tones, narcissism and an overall attitude of entitlement. Her choice of words and phrasing will leave one seeing that HRC truly thinks she is superior to those she was to serve. The fact that she refuses to look in the mirror and hold herself accountable should not shock anyone who reads this.

Funny how Clinton haters respond to this. The book is historical perspective. She is polarizing. Good read.

Ignore the reviews of those who haven't read it that are in here. This book was released on 9/12 not 9/11 so that person did not read it. Brilliant insight into the behind the scenes of what was the most tumultuous election of my times. Clinton writes in ways that amuse and entertain you but also gives you real insight into how difficult this campaign really was. We watched it on tv and read about it in the papers, but it is a breath of fresh air to hear real accounts of what happened from someone who can recall it all and express it in a way that allows us all to understand and view what was beyond us at the time.

Well written by a Yale Law School graduate, former Secretary of State, First Lady, Senator and public servant since she was 19. Encouraging. Inspirational Most of these reviewers commented before the book was published on September 12, 2017. So, just ignore the haters In the past 9 months all of what Hillary tried to tell people throughout her campaign has been proven true. Trumps claims, vicious accusations and mad man antics.

I read this book out of pure curiosity to see if HRC just might show true empathy and provide wisdom learned from the campaign. Disappointed but not surprised. If you like HRC you will find a way to like this book. If you despise HRC you will also find a way to dislike her more. If you are middle grounded, objective and wise you will quickly learn this book is partially fiction and nonfiction. With that said I was more disappointed in HRC than before the read. Yes she took a bit of blame that she had no choice in doing due to facts that could not be twisted. Where she said she was at fault she failed to discuss any details. Where she failed from others, as she perceives, here came the details. Although, I felt this book was mostly a blame game to deflect her own failures onto others and I was taken back by her mentioning negatively in nature many of her supposed close friends. A few comments throughout the book gave the tone of an entitled person out of touch with the everyday citizen living in the middle of the U.S. HRC mentioned she won the popular vote but a old video I have seen she praised the electoral college. So my opinion is she lost the electoral college so it failed her. If she won she would have supported the electoral college as she did in the past. Next, I could not "buy" much of her ideology. The MSM was portrayed as part of her failure although most individuals I am associated with in state government agreed with me the MSM were obviously bias towards displaying a positive light on HRC and avoiding coverage of her possible questionable acts. Trump was literally "verbally attacked" on every possible means available. Aside from the book, I felt President Trump stepped on his own toes a few times and did make a few remarks that deserved scrutiny. Back to the book a quick mention on Russia - it sickened me since I am very aware of the uranium sold to Russia by HRC's hand directly involved and she has the audacity to deflect the Russia issue against her own campaign, well all I will say is Karma. Last, there were a few witty remarks, some blame taken by herself but not enough to improve my feelings towards her. I only found myself disliking her more. Statements in the book just made me feel she is living in a bubble or her own false reality and will never own up to her true failures or make an apology for any true wrong doings. I basically read how all aspects of the election were against her when in reality were against President Trump. I could actually go on and on now that much of the book is coming back to me as I write this but that is time wasted. I was sickened at the mention of the do good not for profit topics and how she cares for the world - rubbish. HRC wants money for this book for personal gain, she was vengeful wanting to give many individuals a piece of her mind in print for the world to see then to manipulate the weak minded to believe her lies in order to gain sympathy and paint herself as the victim when she was quite cruel herself during the campaign and threw the first punch. This book proves HRC can dish it out but not take it in without finding a way to further manipulate the mass. HRC once discussed how she was taught if you tell a lie big enough and say it often enough the weak minded will eventually see it as true. I hope some who read this book can see through her web of manipulation in order to make herself appear as a victim (she is none of that). A MASTER MANIPULATOR

Funny and extremely interesting to learn about her true feelings and behind-the-scenes accounts.

Apart from determining if the information in the book was legible or not, it seems very candid. A few things were interesting to know, and to realize how they changed the course of history.

Don't waste your money on this book. In fact, she should be paying people to waste their time reading this. Same old crap.... it's everyone else's fault I lost, it wasn't me. As usual, taking no responsibility for anything. Poor Hillary...Time to move on. Nothing we haven't heard before. Don't waste your time with this book.

America sure screwed up by not having this wonderful, smart classy woman as President. Shame on those who voted for the crazy one or didn't vote at all. Just think if she was in office we would still have the respect of our allies and so much more.

After reading the many things Hillary was going to do as president, it only reinforces my decision to vote for Trump. She really does not understand why she lost.

Well-written, informative, and in may ways ... painful. This is Hillary's story and she is allowed to tell it any way she wants to tell the story. The 2016 election was a nightmare for many reasons; Trump, Comey, Sanders, and those who have "hated" Hillary for more than 25 years. Bravo for the courage to tell her own version.

Loved it! But then I'm one of the 65 Million that voted for a SMART woman. Yes, I am a woman that is honest with herself and I'm not a misogynist woman, that did not vote for her because she's a woman or a man baby that thought have an dotard in the White House was a better choice. I have the audio version of this book. It's great to listen to but also sad and maddening to know we don't have an intelligent thoughtful PRESIDENT. This book is great and I recommend it to all those intelligent, thoughtful women that are not afraid to break the glass ceiling!

Worth the read . Ignore the hateful remarks. She does take responsibility for her loss. I also agree with the assessment of coverage of the campaign. She will make you laugh and cry!
