Welcome to the Jungle

Welcome to the Jungle

by Jim Rome

Nationally syndicated radio and TV sports talk show host Romey spreads his form of athletic gospel in vitriolic, sensible, and occasionally moralistic ways. Rome spews his "smack," "takes," and viewpoints from previously aired programs, at times straight no chaser, or with music beds underneath. This is Jim Rome's world and his audience, dubbed "the jungle." The best smack (uninhibited opinion) is the final cut "What Is Smack?," which should have comprised the whole recording of listeners' or guests' best takes. Regular caller Steve Carbone rows Rosie O'Donnell and the ESPY's, Lisa from Green Bay pooh pooh's golf, and Mike, the Mayor of Poway, loudly froths about mindless athletes and the media. The best take from Rome, titled "Cops," rails against the current trend of sports stars who double as criminals, gangsters, drug and domestic abusers, and immoral elitists under a bed of Inner Circle's "Bad Boys." In retrospect, "Karma" worked in reverse -- Rome taking credit for the success of L.A. Dodger pitcher Tom Candiotti and Pittsburgh Pirate catcher Jason Kendall. Subsequently, Candiotti was out of a baseball job and Kendall had a season-ending injury in 1999. At his most fervent, boxing promoter Don King has a friendly shouting match with Rome (as a bonus track at the end of "What Is Smack?"), with King totally losing it, quoting Little Milton's "Grits Ain't Groceries." "Don King Did That" is a typically pathetic yet humorous rant from the shock-haired King. The CD also has straight music tracks from Guns N' Roses (title cut,) Kurtis Blow, the Zambonis, the Ramones, the Boomtown Rats, Crystal Method, James Brown Ramsey Lewis' "The In Crowd," and Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life." There's also an extensive glossary of Rome-ese.
