Overview

AN EPIC INTERSTELLAR TALE OF WAR FROM A MASTER OF SCIENCE FICTION.

One more tour on the red.
Maybe my last.

They made their presence on Earth known thirteen years ago.

Providing technology and scientific insights far beyond what mankind was capable of. They became indispensable advisors and promised even more gifts that we just couldn't pass up. We called them Gurus.

It took them a while to drop the other shoe. You can see why, looking back.

It was a very big shoe, completely slathered in crap.

They had been hounded by mortal enemies from sun to sun, planet to planet, and were now stretched thin — and they needed our help.

And so our first bill came due. Skyrines like me were volunteered to pay the price. As always.

These enemies were already inside our solar system and were moving to establish a beachhead, but not on Earth.

On Mars.

I have read at least a half a dozen books by Greg Bear. I have enjoyed every one of these books. I did enjoy this book but it was written as if he had an outline and was too lazy to put in the relevant details. Rather than develop the story he left most things intentionaly vague. It is as if he had no idea where the story go. Some parts were good but I was left very dissatisfied at the end of the book. I hope this type of writing does not become his new style.

War Dogs took me into the mid-term future and put me directly into a first-person viewpoint of an important skyrine, who is a marine in the space (sky) force. There is a war on Mars with an alien race that almost no one knows anything about. A combined force from Earth's nations has been travelling to and from Mars for years. They are fighting with tech revealed to us by another alien civilization. As things progress, they just don't add up, especially after Earth's settlers on Mars become involved. Discoveries on and under Mars and by a few people close to our alien friends on Earth show that we know even less than we thought about both our alien enemies and friends.

I love speculative science fiction, but a reader needs something more about which to speculate than was provided in War Dogs. It is well written (as usual) and characters are fairly well-developed, but the story is incomplete. I have always enjoyed Greg Bear's novels, but this one left me terribly dissatisfied.
