Initially hard for me to grasp, since I am not as familiar with some of the references Keller uses, but once I began to understand his reasons for these references, I could truly grasp his explanation on how trusting in God's teachings can help us through tough times. I found this book purely by accident (or did I?), while going through an especially difficult time in my family's lives. Trust and love come easier for me now - still working on foregiveness.

I am generally a big fan of Tim Keller, but still was very impressed by both how clearly he explains a theological framework and how honestly he talks through the practical aspects of walking with God though suffering. The beginning sections can be a bit dense and might not be helpful for someone in the midst of deep suffering, but are incredibly helpful for someone thinking through the philosophical questions of how a good God can allow suffering and/or someone trying to process an event a friend is going through. These beginning chapters all each end with personal stories of people going through suffering, which help root the bigger theological discussions in real stories. I really feel that this book would be useful for anyone going through suffering, thinking about suffering, and trying to support a friend going through suffering and personally, am recommending it to a lot of my friends. This is a book that I know I will keep coming back to in the future. Highly recommended!
