Wagner: Orchestral Music

Wagner: Orchestral Music

by Claudio Abbado

CD(Canadian Import)

Overview

Even though Claudio Abbado's tenure at the helm of the Berlin Philharmonic is an increasingly distant memory, their recordings continue to appear. And what a happy development that is. This one, which offers orchestral excerpts from Wagner operas and was made live at Berlin's Philharmonie in November 2000, two years before Abbado left the post, shows this great orchestra and their former leader in a radiant light. True, the Berlin players aren't always perfectly in sync (a risk of live recording, apparently), yet their extraordinarily beautiful sound is always a pleasure to behold, and their shared sense of the melodic line and attention to ensemble balance are similarly glorious. Abbado's lyrical touch is present right at the start in the Prelude to Tannhäuser, which begins with some beautifully sustained legato playing from the winds. Likewise, the mystical and far more delicate Parsifal Prelude benefits from some stunningly controlled playing -- listen to how the brass chord about four and a half minutes in seamlessly morphs into the sound of the woodwind choir. Astonishing! Clearly, Abbado is also a devout colorist, and what a palette he has with these players. The big moments are also given their due in the Tristan Prelude and "Liebestod," but they're never overdone. And while there is plenty of potent music here, it's the sense of lyricism and sonic opulence that hits strongest. The recorded sound is appropriately rich and full.
