Vulpes, the Red Fox

View All Available Formats & Editions

He is cunning and courageous, and outwits hunters at every turns . . .  Vulpes was the pride of his parents, the smartest pup of the litter—and he grew into a fast, quick-witted red fox whose abilities became legend among the forest’s hunters. Other foxes avoid the hunt. Not Vulpes. He relishes leading men and hounds on hopeless chases across the countryside, slipping away at the last moment. But one day, Vulpes meets his match, coming face to face with a hunter as wily as he is. But the hunter has a gun.
“A distinguished animal story full of the feel of the wild and the vigor of a life in that wild.”—Library Journal

This is about a fox's life as he grows from a little, helpless kit, to a handsome, skillfull dog fox. You can't help but adore Vulpes noble and lively personality. The ending was a little unexspected and strange, but then again, it's sometimes boring when everything ends the same-old happy way. I don't know, you'll have to read it yourself.

Jean Craighead is well known for her books ; My Side of the Mountain and Julie of the Wolves, but no one should forget about her first book Vulpes, the Red Fox.Vulpes is the "smartest pup out of the litter" and enjoys out-thinking the local farmers and their dogsA great fox story for fox lovers, easy for kids to read and understand. Even the topic of death is lightly touched. The only thing that I didn't like about this book was the pages just dedicated to the farmers, hunters and trappers. I could understand that having the humans talking about the fox can add to his story but more then half of the conversations have almost nothing to do with Vulpes or the plot.
