This has been one of the best games we have purchased for our son. He is six and I never learned to play chess so I could not show him. After reading the rules we played several games that first night. The next night we started playing level 2. After one week and about 50 games later I am proud to say that we don't even use the cards anymore unless my wife wants to play. We still add the cards everynow and again just so the King doesn't always get caught. No Stress Chess is awesome.

We had previous to playing this game gone over general chess info-- how pieces move and how to set up the board with our 4 yo, but this game has allowed him to really think about and practice how the pieces move. Level one has each player rely on whichever card is drawn (which piece to move with instructions on how to move it). This makes the game much more manageable-- only focusing attention on a few pieces and options on where they can move and potentially weighing options on which of a few selected pieces is most beneficial to move and to where. However, it is a very random kind of game, not much strategy can be applied, it is luck of the draw. Two other levels of play are described giving the players a bit more choice in which pieces they can move. Ultimately the game will be played as true chess without use of the cards. Other than more manageable amounts of information to focus on, this game is "winnable" even by a first time player-- great for boosting confidence (versus getting tromped by a computer every time) and resulting in him wanting to play over and over. Also worth noting-- The board has how to set up the chess pieces written on one side of the board and algebraic notation on both sides of the board. The pieces are very durable and have a good "playing weight."

My four year old discovered chess on the nook, but was getting frustrated because the computer always captured her king. On a recommendation from several friends, I ordered this. She is now happily playing (every day since it came in!). She knows how the pieces move and has moved up to level 2 which requires a little strategy, but limited choices. I highly recommend this!

I gave this to my grandson for his 7th birthday. Now he and his father play chess all the time. The No Stress Chess Game exceeded my expectations. It makes chess simple to learn.

Great game because it helps to teach chess in an easy to understand way, but can also be played normally. So it's great for beginners and then when they learn they can just play it as a standard chess game. Great quality. 8 yr old can play with no problem.

The other two folks in my household, neither of whom could play chess before, one because of age, the other because of age(?!), now play this version daily, without trouble, and after only a few games of practice. It isn't "chess" but it builds enough understanding that they will play without the cards very soon.

I bought this game hoping it would keep my grandchildren interested long enough to learn to play. I have played it with both of them (girl age 6 1/2 and boy age 7) and they both love it!

This is an excellent first Chess Set for kids and for parents, grandparents or adults wanting to teach the game to children and/or to learn chess themselves. The double sided board has a guided setup of the pieces on one side of the board and a standard board layout on the flip side. The included deck of cards provides for 3 levels of play, teaching the basic moves of each of the pieces in level 1, and providing for play options and strategy choices in levels 2 and 3. And, of course, full standard play is done without using the cards. The chess pieces are good quality solid plastic. In addition to the "rules" included for playing with the set cards, when teaching our grandchildren we included calling "Check" and "Check Mate" during the game to emphasize the focus and goal of the game.

My four year old and I are having a great time learning to play chess thanks to this system. It's great, easy, fast, (something you don't think of when thinking of chess) and still fun. I highly recommend it to parents and kids as a perfect activity together.

I learned how to play chess on this in my 20's by an 8 year old and now I bought it to teach my husband and stepkids. They are picking up the game very easily and I'm happy. It's great for kids 8 and up!
