Toby, the Pet Therapy Dog, and His Hospital Friends by Charmaine Hammond is a wonderful children’s picture book about caring for others. The realistic illustrations by Rose Anne Prevec will make it possible for all children 4 yrs. and up to enjoy the story. Older kids who read it alone will appreciate the detailed illustrations to help them with their comprehension. Teachers will also love to use this book with their young students because there are teachable themes or messages that lend themselves to great class discussions. Once Toby, the Pet Therapy Dog, and His Hospital Friends has been read, parents, teachers or caregivers can use the fourteen “Questions to Enhance Children’s Critical Thinking Skills” found on the last page as a spring board to great discussions about hospital stays and treatments, about friendships, about one’s fears, and about helping others. The book is well organized so the text and illustrations balance each other to make the story flow along seamlessly. The use of different colored paper for entire pages here and there in the book gives added punch. Sharp, easy to read font in the correct size for young readers is a plus. High quality paper for each page and a laminated cover will make it possible for many little hands to use and enjoy this fine book.

Fun and Educational! My Review: Toby the Pet Therapy Dog and His Hospital Friends is based on a true story from the book and movie Toby’s Terms. This book tells an amazing story about Toby the pet therapy dog, who volunteers in a hospital once a week to cheer up sick children. Toby not only helps the children but also help the elderly. This story not only helps children to care but learn how to be kind and also encourage them to help others. This book is fun and educational with questions at the end of the book about enhancing children’s critical thinking skills about the story. I always like illustrations that help tell the story and Rose Prevec did just that. I highly recommended this book for classroom teaching. Note that a therapy dog is a friend to everyone! Therapy dogs are extremely patient, loving and provide great companionship. Disclaimer: As per FTC guidelines, I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review. Toby, the Pet Therapy Dog and his Hospital Friends is a picture book by Charmaine Hammond, a follow up to On Toby’s Terms, Ms. Hammond’s first book about Toby, the five-year old Chesapeake Bay retriever she and her husband adopted. Toby is a pet therapy dog who visits sick children in the hospital. Through his patience, and unconditional love, Toby makes the children’s hospital stay a little brighter. This simple chronicle of Toby’s day at the hospital gives children (and parents) an insight into what therapy dogs do, and the emotional and spiritual benefits their presence can have. From playing with the kids, dozing to stories told by the nurse at story time, and keeping an older patient company in the garden, Toby’s happy visits are much anticipated not only by the young and old at the hospital, but by Toby himself. Being in the hospital can be a frightening experience for a child, and a lonely one, if the stay is long. Pet therapy animals like Toby can have a significant impact on reducing that stress. Toby and his Hospital Friends demonstrates what an important job Toby has. The language and the pictures are simple and easy to understand, and kids will enjoy following Toby on his rounds visiting with different patients. A list of questions at the end of the book help engage children in thinking about the story and can promote meaningful discussions between adult and child. Books can assist kids in addressing their fears, be it of dogs, doctors, or hospitals, and give voice to anxiety they may have a difficult time expressing. To this end, the gentle story of Toby and his Hospital Friends will definitely appeal to its target audience.

Reviewed by Kristie I. for Readers Favorite Toby, The Pet Therapy Dog, and his hospital friends, written by Charmaine Hammond and illustrated by Rose Anne Prevec, is an adorable book to share with children. Not only is the story enjoyable and the pictures well done, this is a great message to share with children of thinking about others and helping others. Every Wednesday Toby goes to the hospital and spends time with the children and an elderly woman. Toby and those he interacts with all look forward to the Wednesday visits, and Toby helps the children and Mrs. Smith feel better and smile while staying in the hospital. This story is well written and a good length for young children. Toby is a great role model, even if he is a dog! The children will see and hear about Toby doing this kind act, and this is a positive message encouraging them to help others in a way they are able. The questions included at the end of the book are a great addition to the story as these will force the children to think about and process the story. Also, it helps the children to connect with the story and think about how they have and how they could in the future help others and be a good friend. This book would be a great resource to use in a classroom or small group to help encourage kindness and giving back to others.

Toby is a giver. He is well suited to his very important job as a pet therapy dog. Instinctively, Toby knows how a child staying in a hospital needs cheering up and he brings happiness whenever he is on duty. With beautiful illustrations by Rose Anne Prevec, "Toby And His Hospital Friends" is a great book for young readers and to read aloud with children still learning.
