Three Renaissance Travel Plays

Three Renaissance Travel Plays

In his account of a visit to England in 1599, the Swiss traveler Thomas Platter comments at some length on the variety of organized entertainment available in London, reporting visits to two plays and a bearbaiting, and concludes: 'With these and many more amusements the English pass their time, learning at the play what is happening abroad... since the English for the most part do not travel much, but prefer to learn foreign matters and take their pleasures at home.'
