Maisie Potter isn't quite sure why she signed up for the boys' wrestling team. She's never been all that interested in boys, so it can't have anything to do with Eric Delong, in spite of the disturbing effect his smile has on her. And she's certainly not prepared for the effect her presence on the team has on the people around her.

Her brother's totally disgusted with her, her best friend drops her, her classmates ridicule her, and opposing teams forfeit rather than wrestle her. But Maisie's not a quitter, and she discovers that she really likes wrestling — and that while Eric might not be worth the flak she puts up with, feeling good about herself is.

Published 17 years ago, the main themes of gender equity, social bias and boy-girl relationships are relevant and will find an audience with middle school readers today. Maisie Potter, the main character and first person narrator, is competitive. She is her school's athlete of the year. When she isn't chosen as a cheerleader she can't believe it. Simultaneously, she is developing a major crush on Eric Delong, the cutest boy in school, who already has a girlfriend who did make the cheerleading squad. Conflict sustains interest, provokes thought and moves the plot forward to a tidy conclusion.

Do you like wrestling and Jerry Spinelli books? Well, this is the book for you. This book is about a girl who signed up for the cheerleading team and didn't make it, so she joins the wrestling team. Eric Delong is a nice guy who likes to swim and wrestle, too. Liz Lamply hates Masie and is head of the cheerleading team. She likes Eric but Masie likes him, too. Masie Ray is the only girl in the wrestling team. Mr.Chaplie loves to teach wrestling and wrestled in high school. Her brother, her friends, and Liz Lamply make fun of her because she is on the wrestling team, but Masie loves to wrestle. Will Masie follow her passion or will she give in to peer pressure? Read the book to find out. Jerry Spinelli lives in Norristown Pennsylvania. He graduated from Gettysburg College and his first novel was Space Station Seventh Grade. He has seventeen grandchildren. He won a Newberry award for Maniac Magee. I remember when I wrestled with my friend. I strongly recommend this book to people who like wrestling.

Maise Potter is a girl at her high school, who is a cheerleader. Maise thinks that she should quit cheerleading because she saw ¿Washer Woman¿ on TV wrestling. Well, she had another thing coming to her. Potter her wrestling nickname, only joins the wrestling team because of Eric Delong. Maise did this because she has a crush on Eric, and Potter thinks if he gets hurt that it would be him standing over her. This is another thing that she will learn the difference between. Potter has some experiences about kids who don¿t want to wrestle. What will be next? Her way or the highway? Will she get a real match in this year? Read to find out. I liked this book because it taught me that even if I am different, I should never give up, and if you want to give up, and if you want to give up, get a friend 'like maise had her best friend George' to boost you back in he game. The thing I disliked about the book was the end the end was short and did not give much detail.

I loved this bok. It shows how girls can beat boys, how crushes arn t always perfect, a friend is never to far, and how doing what is right matters.

This book is about a girl named Maise Potter. She¿s a girl with a lot of expectations like she tries out for the cheerleading squad she doesn¿t get accepted. Then she goes to talk with Miss Strickland at her office she¿s not there so she goes outside and tells her why she didn¿t make the cheerleading squad then Miss Strickland says there are a lot of names not on the list. Maise then tells her family that she didn¿t make the squad then that¿s when her brother tells her that she is to ugly to be a cheerleader. Her sister wants to be just like her. She hates Liz Lampley for trying to take Eric Delong from Maise. Liz is the girl who plays basketball that¿s why she doesn¿t join the team her best friend Holy Gish is in the team so she tells her not to pay attention to Liz. Now Maise wants to join the wrestling team because Eric Delong is in it. Maise thinks is easy because she watches her favorite wrestler Washer Women but is only a TV show. She goes to the tryouts she gets accepted but doesn¿t realize how tuff it is. Now that she¿s in the wrestling team her best friend Holy Gish is suspecting that she just join the team because Eric Delong is on it. Holy tells why not basketball because Eric is not playing basketball Maise ignores her and then leaves but Maise is interested in Eric anymore because he doesn¿t pay attention to her like she did to him. Then when all this passes she beat up some other kids from different schools. She gets into an argument with some girl but Holy just ignores her

i think maisie kicks butt and shows all of those sexist people that if you are determined enough you can make it,no matter if you are a boy or girl.

Maise potter is a girl who goes after what she wants. It doesnt matter if she loses her best friend or have a lip the size of a golfball. All she cares about at this time getting Eric Delong and Elizabeth 'lizard' Lampley to brake up. This is one of those books that you just cant put it down.

This is a great book. I'm a well built up top girl, and I never thought of wrestling before. Then I tried it with some of my 8th grade guy friends. I wore low cut shirts and sweats- before you know it, I had guys coming over to my house every afternoon! Then one afternoon, my dad came home early from his job, just as this new boy had me in a hammerlock. My friend Tommy spent that winter in a wheelchair. Good good book

This book was a really good book. It helped me find out that us girls do have the right to play any sport we want including the 'guy sports'like wrestling. Maisie is somebody really admireable. Jerry Spinelly is really amazing hopefully he'll keep writting good books such as this one.

This is fine for a junior high school level reader. But I found it to be way corny.
