The Very Best of Chicago: Only the Beginning 4.6 out of 5 based on 0 ratings. 11 reviews.

Without a doubt, the best quality from this band was provided with its earliest material. Sadly, in its quest to achieve commercial success, the band chose to enter the mainstream, focusing on predictable, sugar-coded MOR songs that simply did not (could not) maximize its potential. Classics from the best albums are contained on the first CD (with some exceptions). If you left CD #2 out of this pack, you would still have the content that counts. This band could have been so much more !!

There will never be another Chicago. For anyone who loves rock/pop and hard driving horns this is the ultimate albumn. I already own this one and have practically worn the CD down. Playing in a jazz band in high school and college and loving rock and roll this band is the tops! I share the sentiments of another reviewer and I hope that this really is only the begining!

you will love this compilation. Thanks Chicago for putting together a collection for the people who have loved your music from the beginning.

This is good ol' rock and roll at its best. The horns compliment the singing superbly. Highlights include "You're the Inspiration" and "25 or 6 to 4"...but they are all great. Chicago has real talent...not any digitally fake stuff. Do yourself a favor...pick up "Only the Beginning" as soon as possible.

This is truly a great ensemble of music to be had by any true fan or non-chalant fan...There is something for everyone and Rhino has done an excellent job of remastering these songs... Let's hope this is truly ''Only The Beginning''...after all the reissues are finished hopefully we will see some new material released...

If you are like me, and know Chicago best from their appearances on vinyl, and didn't splurge on much digital copy, now is the time to pick up a Chicago CD collection. All the major songs from every studio album of each decade in order, are here. The sound quality is good to superb; the older master tapes suffer hiss, particularly on ''Color My World'' but that is exactly how the band heard it in the studio those days, believe me. Remastering also seems to bring out the lead vocals subtle texture on most of the older material strikingly (and you'll love it). Now, if you are used to techno-inspired drum loops and canned multi-layered fake harmonies and pseudo-horns played on old excuses for synthesizers common in the 70s and 80s forget it. This is the real deal, in fact the horns sound so good, they ''seem'' a little dry without all the technical psycho-acoustics. They are just tightly and sharply played wind instruments that gel-well with the succession of soaring vocalists over the years that make this band a real institution. I'll forgive ''Sing, Sing, Sing'' if you will, otherwise not a single clinker in the batch. Grab it now and thank me later!

What's not to like about this title? It has everything going for it. Great songs by a great band and superb Rhino mastering add up to one excellent package. This is a title to which you'll want to listen over and over again.
