CHAPTER 1

1

Living, Dying
non-living, non-dying
birth, death
awareness, non-awareness ...
are just words.

The Tao allows us to ...
explore and transcend ...
the containment of words.

Before words.
there was The Tao.
After words ...
there will be The Tao.
Ultimately,
The Tao is ...
the essence of essence.

Thus, in order to transcend ...
in order to explore
the essence of essence ...
in order to experience The Tao.
breathe – in, breathe — out.
Be with your breath mindfully ...
and allow yourself to
pass through the boundaries
of perception ...
moment by moment ...
happily and joyfully ...
un-happily and un-joyfully.

And you will begin to enter ...
the tao of mindful being ...

2

Without left ...
there can be no right;
without ugly ...
there can be no beauty;
without out — breath ...
there can be no in — breath;
without death ...
there can be no life.

One cannot exist ...
without the other.

Alike ...
silence defines sound ...
light illuminates darkness ...
known deciphers unknown ...
beauty makes vivid ugly ...
name names no-name ...
past determines future ...
art exposes science ...
science exposes art.

An insightful individual ...
teaches by example ...
gives without expectation ...
attaches to nothing ...
can mindfully be without doing ...
can discern without judgment ...
can exist here and now ...
only thinking about others ...
not oneself.

3

Tributes, accolades and celebration of another ...
can cause one to wrestle with and stray from "The Way."

Desiring custody of abundant valuables ...
can water the seeds of compulsion to take and possess.

Becoming blinded by the yearning for
lust, craving, greed and desire ...
can cause much disorder and bewilderment.

For this reason, the mindful luminary
shows one how to water the seeds of ...
Open heart
&
Quiet mind
&
following one's breath in meditation and day-to-day life ...
&
looking deeply into one-self to see things as they truly are ...
&
showing love, kindness, compassion and
respect to all sentient beings.

Overcoming craving and attachment
is the root of mindful – being.

Be in each moment, as opposed to doing each moment ...
let each moment take you.

Let the river inside you flow.

4

A full glass ...
like a full mind is ...
incapable of accepting anything more.

Tao is an infinite, limitless, empty bowl.

Like a mirror ...
Tao never absorbs the image it reflects;
therefore, Tao can never be drained.

Like the ocean or a rapid river ...
Tao can soften the sharpest edge ...
untangle any entanglement ...
calm any undesirable flame to ashes;
quell any flare.

Infinitely profound ...
Tao is like a calm, gentle breeze ...
so pleasant, yet almost undiscernible.

Tao was here before the concept of before.

5

Heaven and earth ...
good and bad ...
above and below ...

... as a matter of fact ...

all opposites create ...
and need to create ...
tension for one another.

There is a space ...
it exists between each breath;
between each note of music;
between the sound of the bell ...
... and its silence.

This is the mindful place to be ...

6

To continue the previous precept ...
regarding ...
... the moment ... between ... each ... breath ...

When we take a breath in ...
this breath either ...
allows us to exhale ...
or not to exhale.

This is the inexhaustible heart of Tao.

This is the heart of being in each moment.

This is everything ...
... and no-thing.

7

Heaven is timeless;
Earth unceasing.

Spirit and body are the same.

While here ...
neither one ...
... comes before the other.

However,
while here ...
in this brief moment ...
it would be wise to ...
let go of your ego.

Put others first ...
yourself last.

When you do this ...
you will find center ...
and ...
Miracles will occur.

8

Each water molecule ...
does not compete with each other.

Neither should you nor me.

Water is ...
the source of our existence.

Water allows gravity ...
and the beautiful clouds ...
to take it where it will ...
without ego and judgment ...
so should you and me.

This will bring us to enlightenment.

9

Balance yourself mindfully.
Remember ...
if you over — fertilize a lawn ...
you will burn it.

Find the balance between less and more ...
... and more and less.
... and learn to know where to stop.

This is the gateway of being.

10

When you can mindfully focus ...
... and balance ...
... upon the center ...

When you can mindfully give ...
without expectation ...

When you can be ...
... when you can receive ...
without being suspect of ...
... ulterior motive ...

You will begin to know ...
... who the mindful master is ...

11

Without the hub of a wheel ...
there can be no spokes.

Without spokes ...
there can be no hub.

Without emptiness ...
there can be no fullness.

Without fullness ...
there can be no emptiness.

Without left ...
there can be no right.

Without right ...
there can be no left.

Without imperfection ...
there can be no perfection.

Without mindlessness ...
there is no mindfulness.

Without being ...
there is no-being.

One does not exist without the other.

12

We have been raised from birth to ...
enhance our wild mind ...
over our quiet mind.

Even when still ...
we continue to allow ...
our five senses to blind us.

There is a sixth sense ...
our mindfulness.

When we train to ...
... harness our mind ...
our senses will become quiet.

It's up to you ...
to cultivate this over that.

13

Please know that ...
seeking favor ...
will ultimately ...
bring disgrace.

Hope and fear ...
are illusions ...
of our mind.

You ...
like a drop of water ...
are the ocean ...
and the ocean is you.

14

Blindness is ...

looking ...
not seeing ...

hearing ...
not listening;
not listening to...

... the faint call from within.

grasping ...
not holding.

no above ...
no below ...

nothing ...
no — thing ...

These are some moments to ...
begin to discover ...

Mindfulness.

15

Enlightened masters ...
... old and new ...
know that ...
... all experience is impermanent.

Enlightened ones ...
virtually go unnoticed;
they are the flicker of light ...
that brings awareness to darkness;
to describe them is in-describable.

Enlightened ones ...
respect all sentient beings ...
... even rocks.

Enlightened ones are ...
all and nothing at the same time;
they experience ...
... all and nothing at the same time.

Not seeking fullness ...
the enlightened one can ...
... remain quiet.

16

True wisdom is ...
knowing how to withstand ...
knowing the difference between ...
emptiness and lack of emptiness.
Otherwise ...
one will agonize with ego, passion & desire.

One endures by ...
being open to all ...
... without judgment;
knowing that ...
... we are all connected.

Non-judgment brings ...
transcendence ...
and a life free of pain.

Thereupon,
observe each moment;
each breath ...
... be it ...

... whether ...
... a passing cloud or ...
... a raging river.

17

When we blunder virtue ...
we allow deceit.

Be ...
compassionate,
giving,
loving
&
kind
within each moment ...
and take credit for nothing.

18

When you are truly being in the moment ...
you are not thinking about being in the moment.

When you are thinking about being in the moment ...
you are not truly in the moment.

When you are experiencing harmony and tranquility ...
there is no need for you to think about being
kind ...
compassionate
&/or
loving.

It is only when your mind is racked with anxiety that ...
you long for calm.

However, without anxiety ...
the concept of calm ...
could not present itself.

19

When you open your mind and horizons ...
your life experience ...
will be exponential.

Shedding self-righteousness ...
will expose you to become ...
empathetic towards others unlike you.

Remember ...
the burglar cannot exist ...
when there is benefit.

It is essential to seek ...
authenticity ...
&
integrity.

Avoid ...
egocentricity ...
&
yearning.

20

We are all connected ...
within this continuum of existence.

The only variance is that ...
we are each at different points ...
upon this continuum.

Nevertheless ...
I am you;
You are me;
we each feel ...
the same love and fear.

Without ...
no ...
there could be no ...
yes.
Without a frown ...
there could be no smile;
Without left ...
no right;
Without hate ...
no love ...

Between ...
unpleasant and pleasant is ...
neutral.

Between ...
defense and offense is ...
peace.

21

Empty your mind ...
... and you will find ...
Tao.

The place of no beginning ...
... and no end ...

Tao is ...
Right here ...
Right now ...
This moment ...
This breathe ...
Nothing more ...
Nothing less.

12

Know your balance point or dot (.)
This way ...
you will understand ...
and be with ...
the ebb and flow ...
of your continuum.

Stop ...
when you need to stop ...
Go ...
when you need to go ...
Yield ...
when you need to yield ...
Bend ...
when you need to bend ...

Know that ...
fullness ...
will only come ...
when you empty yourself;
rejuvenation ...
will only come ...
when you are happily exhausted.

23

"Sabbe sankhara annica ti ..."
All experience is impermanent!

There is no need to ...
... try to control that ...
which is uncontrollable?

Your focus ...
will be upon that ...
which you focus ...
... nothing more ...

24

Let go of your ego;
be within each moment ...
and there ...
... you will be with Tao.

25

Tao?
What is Tao?

Tao is silent ∞

Tao is ...
that space ...
that point ...
that moment ...
that dot (.)
between ...
here and there ...
between love and fear.

Tao is ...
the space;
the point;
the moment;
the dot (.)
that connects us to ...

*
Infinity ∞

(.)

26

You can't find one ...
without the other.

Without left ...
there can be no right.

You cannot understand non-attachment ...
without experiencing attachment.

If you want to ...
change your life ...
change your mind!

27

Walk softly ...
speak quietly ...
possess only that ...
which you need ...

There is only need to untangle ...
unless you tangle.

Have compassion for all sentient beings.

Only when you don't know ...
you can begin to know.

28

Artists know that ...
"... All children are artists ...
the problem is ...
how to remain an artist ...
once you become an adult?"

Remain young ...
... as you grow old ...
If life becomes complicated ...
return to simplicity.

If your ego rears itself ...
return to humility.

The best control is ...
... non-control.

Let go ...
in order to receive.

Let the day take you ...
... and you will be amazed ...

Knowing this ...
you will begin to understand ...
immortality ...
&
limitlessness ...
&
infinity ...

You will begin to understand Tao.

29

Extremes will ...
off-set you ...

The middle will ...
balance you.

You will lose control ...
when you attempt to control.

Hence ...
... mindfulness.

Sometimes ...
success is ...
not about ...
succeeding.

You will be manipulated ...
once you try to manipulate.

There is no grasping Tao.

30

If you over fertilize your crop ...
you will destroy it.

There is no need to control;
force is not necessary.

Kindness ...
&
Compassion
&
Love ...
(which will lead you to faith) ...
will overcome force.

Just know that ...
if you choose to use a weapon ...
to bring harm to others ...
that weapon may come back ...
to bring harm to you.

Do what you need to do ...
nothing more ...

Otherwise ...
let go ...
... and be ...

31

When you are mindful ...
you are able to discern ...
when to raise a weapon and use it.

This is a very last resort;
because, weapons are not tools of Tao.

It is easy to hide behind a weapon ...

Much harder to seek non-violent peace ...

If you have to use a weapon ...
... and succeed ...
Honor your victim ...
with your broken heart and tears.

Victory in battle ...
should be looked upon ...
... as a funeral for your brother.

32

Trying to capture Tao ...
is like ...
trying to capture a wisp of air in your hand.

Capturing Tao ...
is like capturing ...
the most beautiful harmonious note of a symphony.

If this could happen ...
the world would be without hate and war and fear.

Until then ...
please know that ...
mindfulness ...
allows us to ...
be within this moment ...
and realize ...
... now ...

As we flow like a river ...

33

Know how to observe others ...
... and attempt while here ...
to become enlightened.

Believe that ...
it is harder to master yourself ...
than trying to master others.

Mastering others takes violence!!!

Mastering yourself takes ...
Tenacity ...
&
Courage ...
&
Strength.

If you want to be wealthy ...
quiet yourself.

If you want to succeed ...
endure.

Before you leave each moment ...
experience ...
each moment.
