The Shadow: Weird Adventure based on 0 ratings. 1 reviews.
This collection contains one of the more interesting, intellectual episodes of The Shadow, "Valley of the Living Dead", which is a thinly veiled criticism of the New Deal about a valley where people are paid not to work. What makes it especially interesting is that it stresses that it's a moral point, not merely a political one, by making the valley privately run. Of course, there is the usual conservative nonsense about freedom being a gift from god, and some weird stuff about how the man in charge is somehow selfish for "helping" others...there is some indication that his motive is to make them dependent and thus gain power over them, but he protests that this is not so, and indeed his motives are irrelevant here in that the results would be the same were he selfless in *every* sense. The rest of the set offers more typical Shadow fare, but it's pretty decent.
