Overview

The Plant Paradox: The Hidden Dangers in "Healthy" Foods That Cause Disease and Weight Gain by Steven R Gundry M.D.

"I read this book... it worked. My autoimmune disease is gone and I'm 37 pounds lighter in my pleather." —Kelly Clarkson

Most of us have heard of gluten—a protein found in wheat that causes widespread inflammation in the body. Americans spend billions of dollars on gluten-free diets in an effort to protect their health. But what if we’ve been missing the root of the problem? In The Plant Paradox, renowned cardiologist Dr. Steven Gundry reveals that gluten is just one variety of a common, and highly toxic, plant-based protein called lectin. Lectins are found not only in grains like wheat but also in the “gluten-free” foods most of us commonly regard as healthy, including many fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, and conventional dairy products. These proteins, which are found in the seeds, grains, skins, rinds, and leaves of plants, are designed by nature to protect them from predators (including humans). Once ingested, they incite a kind of chemical warfare in our bodies, causing inflammatory reactions that can lead to weight gain and serious health conditions.

At his waitlist-only clinics in California, Dr. Gundry has successfully treated tens of thousands of patients suffering from autoimmune disorders, diabetes, leaky gut syndrome, heart disease, and neurodegenerative diseases with a protocol that detoxes the cells, repairs the gut, and nourishes the body. Now, in The Plant Paradox, he shares this clinically proven program with readers around the world.

The simple (and daunting) fact is, lectins are everywhere. Thankfully, Dr. Gundry offers simple hacks we easily can employ to avoid them, including:

  • Peel your veggies. Most of the lectins are contained in the skin and seeds of plants; simply peeling and de-seeding vegetables (like tomatoes and peppers) reduces their lectin content.
  • Shop for fruit in season. Fruit contain fewer lectins when ripe, so eating apples, berries, and other lectin-containing fruits at the peak of ripeness helps minimize your lectin consumption.
  • Swap your brown rice for white. Whole grains and seeds with hard outer coatings are designed by nature to cause digestive distress—and are full of lectins.

With a full list of lectin-containing foods and simple substitutes for each, a step-by-step detox and eating plan, and delicious lectin-free recipes, The Plant Paradox illuminates the hidden dangers lurking in your salad bowl—and shows you how to eat whole foods in a whole new way.

Would give 0 if I could, Pseudo-science at its best.

All we really need to know is what is observable, testable, and repeatable in humans today. Origins presuppositions & speculation = lost credibility.

Fascinating information that definitely leaves you wondering if it is all true or partially true. Very well written and easy to read. I am left with the feeling that I now need to verify much of the contents. In today's world it is difficult to know what is fact and true or an exaggeration or scientific BS. I am not stating this book contents are BS, but it puts you in the middle of polarized scientists and doctors. Read it and decide for yourself. I recommended it to the people in my life.

Absolute rubbish! "Dr." Gundry should be ashamed of himself. Most of his claims have no references in peer-review journals and therefore purely anecdotal at best and pseudoscience at worst. Most concerning is how bad he misleads the readers. When he does actually cite a peer-reviewed article, it doesn't support his statement. He takes advantage of people that don't bother to check references or understand what the actual references are saying. Shameful stuff. I don't write reviews normally but felt compelled to give this the lowest possible rating.

The more I read, the more I rejected this doctor's claims. They were extreme, as was he.

Rubbish. Humans have been consuming these fruits for hundreds of thousands of years and we are supposed to believe this snake-oil guru has somehow discovered its all poison. Tomfoolery.

Did you know that 90% of folks who survive a heart attack will go back to their old habits within six months? As a heart surgeon, Dr. Gundry has seen this happen time after time. Dr. Albert Einstein (1879-1955) is reported to have said the definition of insanity is: "Doing something over and over again and expecting different results." "The Plant Paradox" will open your eyes to a better and healthier lifestyle - no matter your age or challenges. As the Nike slogan says, "Just Do It!"

wow ...all I can say is wow. I read this book the first day I got it and was amazed to learn some of the things that was in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to be healthy. I have already started using it to make changes. I also use the vital reds from Dr. Grundy and they make a big difference in how you fell.
