Overview

Minnesota native Amy Thielen, host of Heartland Table on Food Network, presents 200 recipes that herald a revival in heartland cuisine in this James Beard Award-winning cookbook.

Amy Thielen grew up in rural northern Minnesota, waiting in lines for potluck buffets amid loops of smoked sausages from her uncle’s meat market and in the company of women who could put up jelly without a recipe. She spent years cooking in some of New York City’s best restaurants, but it took moving home in 2008 for her to rediscover the wealth and diversity of the Midwestern table, and to witness its reinvention.

The New Midwestern Table
reveals all that she’s come to love—and learn—about the foods of her native Midwest, through updated classic recipes and numerous encounters with spirited home cooks and some of the region’s most passionate food producers. With 150 color photographs capturing these fresh-from-the-land dishes and the striking beauty of the terrain, this cookbook will cause any home cook to fall in love with the captivating flavors of the American heartland.

Amy Thielen's book 'The New Midwestern Table" is an exceptionally well written cookbook that is highlighted with beautiful photography. Amy has a tremendous knowledge of food and food culture and she masterfully intertwines this with family stories and history that we can all relate to at some level. Amy shares with us some recipes that have been handed down unchanged for generations in many Midwestern families and she obviously uses her skills as a New York Chef to give a modern twist to some old recipes that we will all recognize. The New Midwestern Table is a cookbook for everyone who loves food and loves to share food with family and friends. This is a cookbook that is actually fun to read and makes you want to start cooking.

I hesitated to purchase another cookbook, but there are a number of fine recipes here to try, and one of my biggest reasons for purchase is that Thielen is a very good writer. Having relocated from Michigan to the Minnesota area eight years ago, I wanted to connect more with the area and its history. Despite the general quality of the book, I think "Midwestern" is a misnomer, as the recipes seem more reflective of Minnesota/Wisconsin/The Dakotas, than other parts of the Midwest. That's my only caveat.

What a beautiful book - photos, typefont, and illustrations are all a visual feast. Great narrative style in the interesting stories for each recipe.   I started bookmarking recipes as I first skimmed through the book, then realized I'd put a tab on almost every page.  The pink (beet pickled) eggs look fun and  I'm especially looking forward to trying the recipes that feature spring/summer fruits and veggies.
