The darkly atmospheric The Negotiator is a solid if unremarkable action score. If film music can be both successful and predictable, Graeme Revell's efforts certainly fit the description. Revell employs the menacing electronic textures now de rigueur within the genre and, while he's undoubtedly a stronger and more original composer than many of his rivals, The Negotiator's consummate craftsmanship doesn't disguise the fact that we've all heard this kind of score many times before. That said, Revell does muster a number of clever melodic twists that ratchet the tension to excellent effect: familiar yes, boring no.
