At the one-year anniversary of his death, legendary musician Prince's first wife shares a uniquely intimate, candid, and revelatory look inside the personal and professional life of one of the world's most beloved icons.

In The Most Beautiful, a title inspired by the hit song Prince wrote about their legendary love story, Mayte Garcia for the first time shares the deeply personal story of their relationship and offers a singular perspective on the music icon and their world together: from their unconventional meeting backstage at a concert (and the long-distance romance that followed), to their fairy-tale wedding (and their groundbreaking artistic partnership), to the devastating losses that ultimately dissolved their romantic relationship for good. Throughout it all, they shared a bond more intimate than any other in Prince's life. No one else can tell this story or can provide a deeper, more nuanced portrait of Prince—both the famously private man and the pioneering, beloved artist—than Mayte, his partner during some of the most pivotal personal and professional years of his career. The Most Beautiful is a book that will be returned to for decades, as Prince's music lives on with generations to come.

Kirkus Reviews
Prince's ex-wife recalls the joys and heartbreaks of life with the late superstar. When Garcia met Prince, she was a 16-year-old military brat living with her family in Germany and making a healthy living as popular belly dancer. With the encouragement of her hard-charging mother, she got a videotape of her moves into Prince's hands, launching a friendship that, once she was of age, blossomed into a romance. Garcia recalls her early enchantment with the funk-pop-rock virtuoso, from his hotel rooms dolled up by a "foo foo master" assigned to make them homier to his conversational charm to his scent ("like the most expensive shelf in the Sephora perfume aisle") to notes revealing his vulnerable side ("U're so pretty. It cheers me up if someone tries 2 ruin my day. Many do"). Prince became her employer (she danced on his tours in the 1990s), first lover, and, in 1996, husband. Garcia's memoir is mostly a warmhearted remembrance of life with Prince, but she also recalls chafing at life in the gilded cage of Paisley Park and, late in their brief marriage (they divorced in 2000), his alienating obsession with Jehovah's Witness doctrine. The deepest wound, however, was the 1996 death of their week-old infant son, who was born severely deformed; a later miscarriage all but ended their relationship: "If fighting was an ‘exercise,' the last year of our marriage was a spin class from hell." Prince could be callous, she recalls: he put her to work less than a month after their son died, was unfaithful, and left her saddled with an expensive property after the divorce. But little bitterness fills these pages. Garcia closes with assertions that she's moved on (Hollywood Exes, an adopted daughter, an animal rescue) and expressions of regret that Prince's life was cut short. A genial, candid portrait of Prince's ill-fated turn as a family man.
From the Publisher
"An achingly loving memoir...a heartbreaking inside look at the tortured side of genius that most of us are never allowed to see, and it belongs on the shelf next to the definitive Prince bios."—Entertainment Weekly

"Garcia's memoir raises complex issues about the nature and the value of privacy,
whether between celebrities and their fans, or two people in their intimate lives together....given all of her book's revelations, Garcia never comes across as vindictive...."—Maclean's

I've long been a fan of Prince and his music. Mayte did an excellent job of describing life with a music icon. You are able to see the man he was through her eyes and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. 5 stars for Mayte Garcia ! I hope in time, perhaps she will write another book whether it's about her life with Prince or another subject, I think she is a talented author and would enjoy reading more of her work.

Really good book. A real love story written beautifully. I have been a fan of this man since 1980. I've seen his evolution. I was quite interested in hearing more about Mayte considering that when she came in his life he became a different man. Their time together was a pivotal time in his life. Despite the heartbreak and the tragedy they experienced, she tells this story with her heart. To all the naysayers, perhaps you should actually read the book before judging. Excerpts, within context, seem to make more sense to me. Reading this book proves that she respected him in both life and death. Her story dispels any of the rumors that have floated around for years about the couple. Her story also shows a different side on Prince.. Glad I purchased it.

Laughter and tears. It is so strange to be alive in a world without Prince... I would recommend this book to anyone who grew up listening and dancing to Prince's music. Very well written with heart and soul. Thank you Mayte for sharing with us. Blessings

I was absolutely impressed by this book and truly enjoyed reading it. Mayte, your story is amazing. I have always loved our homeboy Prince. Your story shows his human side. You are an amazing woman who has experienced a lot of heartache yet you wrote a book that is uplifting, understanding, and forgiving. Thank you for sharing your story with us!

I really enjoyed reading this memoir. A lot of it was extremely heartbreaking and hard to get through. Mayte makes people realize Prince was a human like everyone else. Nothing "bad" or "scandalous" at all here even though she received much criticism for writing a book he wouldnt have liked. This was her life, too, and her husband happened to be Prince. This book is a must read!

This is an absolutely wonderful book. It made me cry. My wife and I suffered two miscarriages before having our daughter. She's an energetic 4-month old and, like all fathers, I sometimes worry if I'm doing everything in my power to make her life better. Reading this book has given me a very positive feeling: we will all be fine! I have been a Prince / O(+> fan for most of my life. There were times in my life / his career when I found his music particularly inspiring. The time when Mayte and Prince were together was among those times ( The O(+> album through Newpower Soul). This was when I myself was becoming spiritually curious and the music really spoke to me then. I know Mayte had a significant hand in inspiring the music, so I was a Mayte fan as well (never mind the fact that the first time I saw Prince live was during the Act 1 tour and Mayte was so important for that tour). I was heartbroken when they fell apart and, to be honest, his music lost me...for a while. But as always, he won me back. How I wish he was still here! Thanks, Mayte, for this wonderful story. I can't wait to read your next book, whatever the subject.

I loved this book! She is a great writer and was very respectful in the way that she portrayed Prince. I liked him growing up but knew nothing about his personal life. I had no idea he was ever even married. This was one of those books that I really took my time reading and

Such a lovely story! I've been a Prince friend (fan) since the age of seven around the time he first started getting airplay. Love the honesty and some untruths have been cleared up. If you're a true Prince friend you'll really enjoy this book you won't be disappointed. Well worth the wait. Peace and love 0(+>
