Overview

This singular story about musical insects celebrates language and the inventive spirit of jazz. The book includes an audio CD, and FREE AUDIO DOWNLOAD, featuring the author's narration set to a jazz quartet. A fly, who speaks jazz, asks different critters which way to town. "Rrribit," replies the frog. "Oink," says the hog. Although baffled, the fly hears music in their words, and that evening he uses those sounds to set the insect dinner club a hoppin.' The computer enhanced artwork of Karen Hanke perfectly complements the text and CD. Get ready to tap, snap, and swing to the beat as Nancy the Gnat, Willie the Worm, and Sammy the Centipede take the stage. Here's a combination of storytelling, visual art, and music for children to savor time and again.

This story is about a fly who is trying to find his way to the city so he could play in a band. On his journey to the club he meets different animals to ask directions, but he cannot understand what they are saying. When he makes it to the club, the band begins to play, but if they cannot come up with a new sound, they will no longer be able to play in the club. So then the fly adds each of the animal sounds he heard on his journey to the song he his playing. Then each night before going to play in the band, he invites the different animals to come with him.

We attended a reading at Barnes and Noble today in Redlands, Ca. Author Matthew Gollub read/performed several of his books including The Jazz Fly and Jazz Fly 2. My son, Aiden, has a new love for The Jazz Fly one and two...and for Jazz!! He is a big Thomas the Tank Engine fan and as he was playing with them, after we bought and read the books (several times) and listened along with the CDs he is making his trains speak Jazz as they go about their jobs. I went to his room and he had his plastic animals lined up along the track and as the trains went by he was "zip bop be da dumming" along and using each animal's sound in the song he was making up. Thank you for inspiring my child Mr. Gollub!I was so excited about my sons excitement,I took the books to my 5th grade classroom where even the "cool kids" begged to hear & read along with the Jazz Fly over and over!!!! God bless you & the continued success of your books Matthew! A must read for everyone!

"ZA-baza, BOO-zaba, ZEE-zah RO-ni!" My 8 year old has been scatting and singing along with The Jazz Fly ever since he shared this book with accompanying CD with his 4 year old sister. They both love this book. The groove is infectious. If you are looking for a way to introduce your children to jazz, this delightful picture book is primo. A lovely jazz quartet swings along with your child as they follow the author's narration. The message is sweet as well. The Jazz Fly gains inspiration from the animals he meets along the way, mixing their sounds with his own to create something new. The spirit of cooperation and sharing continues as you hear the Jazz Bugs play together and then separately as they take their solos. Your child can then hear the distinctive voices of the bass, sax, piano and drum kit. Karen Hanke's illustration is stellar. The combination of bright color with shaded grays acts as the perfect backdrop. The latter hearkens back to the feel of the Jazz Age, with its famous black and white photos. The Jazz Fly is very hip. My kids love it! (There's a sequel as well. Jazz Fly 2, The Jungle Pachanga brings the Jazz Fly to the rainforest where he learns some Spanish and swings to the beats of Latin Jazz. Very cool.

Gollub manages to convey an important message of being open to learning a new language while also demonstrating the concept of syncopation through onomatopoeia and mater! Amazzzzing!

The Jazz Fly is a great book to incorporate music into a unit about insects. The CD that comes with the book is excellent music demonstrating different instruments with comical, rhythms, that make your students want to sing and dance. The students ask to hear it over and over again. Parents have called me to find out where they can purchase the books because it's the first book some of their children have ever asked for and has been requested over electronic toys. Parents have told me this book has made their child want to read.

Our almost 4 year old son got this from the library and is begging for his own copy now. He LOVED it! They rhythm is great and within a few listens he was singing the song. Every once in a while he'll just start singing it...he learned about several instruments he's not heard of before (especially bass) and loved listening to it with us and on his own. A great and fun way to expose kids to the jazz genre!

As a kindergarten teacher of 20 years, I have become a connaisseur of great children's literature. The Jazz Fly is among the very best books that incorporate music for children, as special as Pete Seeger's Abiyoyo or Raffi's Baby Beluga. On The Jazz Fly's included CD you'll hear Gollub's polished reading and skat singing -- done with a sophisticated beat, a singable tune, and backed by a jazz combo with attitude. There's a keyboard, a string bass, a tenor sax, and of course, the drums. The children in my class LOVE this book and ask to hear it again and again. I'm happy to oblige: it's good music.

The Jazz Fly is lost and needs to ask for directions. The trouble is, he speaks only jazz. As in scat jazz. As in 'ZA-BAZA BOO-ZABA ZEE-ZA RONI.' This is an inspired introduction to jazz which kids will swarm to...well, like flies. Very rhythmic vocal performance by author Matthew Gollub. The CD, featuring the narration backed by a jazz quartet, is worthy of radio time as 'stand alone' music. Our kids have asked to hear this literally dozens of times, and amazingly, my wife and I still love it. Truly one of the best book finds we've come across in years.
