Overview

Tolkien's famous saga, the prelude to The Lord of the Rings, has all the ingredients of fantasy and adventure: dwarves, elves, goblins and trolls, a fearsome dragon, a great wizard, a perilous quest and a dramatic climax. At the centre is the unsuspecting hero Bilbo Baggins, a home-loving unambitious Hobbit who is suddenly thrust into the biggest, indeed the only, adventure of his life.

The radio dramatisation of The Hobbit became a classic when it was first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1968 and it continues to delight today.

Unfortunately, this audio book was a huge disappointment. It isn't the dramatic unabridged reading of the Hobbit it purported to be. It is a stylized INTERPRETATION of the book. Many scenes were left out and some were written by the BBC and added. Any fan of Tolkien knows what a perfectionist he was and should shun this version. It was like reading the Lord of the Rings Trilogy in Cliff notes and expecting to know the whole thing. I will continue buying audio books from Barnes and Noble in the future, but probably not books from the BBC.

Apparently some of the cabbages posting below had no idea of what they were buying.  This is NOT an "audiobook" it is a dramatized version of the book that was broadcast on BBC radio, then sold on tape, and later on CD.  I think the "BBC" should have been a clue.
