One of the few survivors of a League sneak attack on his poor and miserable homeworld of Carescria, Wilf Brim sets out to settle the score. Were it not for the attrition from the war that followed, Wilf would never have escaped his lower-class status and been accepted into the Academy. Now, freshly graduated, young Sublieutenant Wilf Ansor Brim, Imperial Fleet, begins his first assignment, Helmsman of the I.F.S. Truculent.

Author Bill Baldwin returns to the Helmsman saga with this "Director’s Cut" Special Edition of the book that started it all. Galactic Convoy, The Trophy, The Mercenaries, The Defenders, and The Siege will follow, leading up the the release of the long awaited The Turning Tide.

Military old school fallen into disarray from its own bigotry and self centered nepotism gets to the point of being destroyed by an even worse goverment set on slavery. Only by allowing the "Lower Castes" into the star force is the ability to win the galatic struggle possible. There are battles, good science, aliens, and the whole genra in this book. The others in the series are even better and describe the rise of Wilf Brim from lowly menial to one of Heroic heights by ability and downright balls. A good read for even the military orientied.
