They made a mighty big splash with the deceptively catchy 1998 single "The Way," but then slipped back into the shadows, making folks ponder the possibility that these Austinites were another in the new wave of one-hit wonders. Well, there's no telling if another smash lurks in the grooves of The Harsh Light of Day, their third album, but Fastball certainly prove that there's plenty of obsessively listenable material left in their bag of tricks. The surprisingly textured set starts out on a dark, introspective note, with frontman Miles Zuniga nagging at some serious psychic scabs on the mournfully melodic "This Is Not My Life" -- a tone that continues on the cinematic ballad "You're an Ocean." While such concerns pop up frequently, the trio afford some room for listeners to take a breather, as on the knowingly cheesy "Love Is Expensive and Free," which bobs along to a synthetic beat that sounds like it was transported from a shopping mall organ shop. Zuniga manages to invest his songs with a sense of maturity without sounding like too much of a sourpuss -- and, as evidenced by "Vampires" -- without losing his grounding in the pure pleasures of good old-fashioned rock 'n' roll. A fine pitch, indeed.

If you think ''the wallflowers'' are great, and if you love ''matchbox 20'', try ''fastball'' then you will certainly appreciate my review. I personally discovered ''fastball'' since their previous release. Now it is one of my favorites..Dario

These guys truly rock. Their intelligent lyrics coupled with catchy melodies make you want to hear more and more of their songs. ''Love Is Expensive and Free'' is one of the all-time greats in my opinion. The other tracks are not far behind in quality. Just wonderful to listen to or sing along with. Texas can be proud of these guys, not only their mommas.
