It was a warm summer day in 1951 when Rose Pottinger and Mrs. Zimmermann entered the tunnel. When they had emerged, it was snowing...and the year was 1828.

Mrs. Zimmermann had felt that the ghost of Granny Wetherbee, who had taught Mrs. Zimmermann witchery, was in trouble and needed help. So she and Rose Rita had traveled to Pennsylvania where Granny had lived. They never dreamed that they would also journey back to a time long ago where they would encounter a sorcerer more terrifying than either could have imagined.

John Bellairs has written another scary thriller starring Rose Rita Pottinger and Mrs. Zimmermann, who last appeared in The Letter, the witch, and the Ring, the third book in The House With a Clock in its Walls trilogy.

John Bellairs's untimely death interrupted a very illustrious writing career. However there are several more books that Mr. Bellairs left that Dial will be publishing. Brad Strickland, a longtime Bellairs fan, will be completing them, just as he did The Ghost in the Mirror. Mr. Strickland is the author of several books, including Dragon's Plunder.

When Rose Rita Pottinger and her friend Mrs. Zimmerman set off to visit Stonebridge, Pennsylvania in the year 1951, the last thing they expect is to be transported back to the year 1828 to aid young Hilda Weiss, Mrs. Zimmerman's mentor in magic as a girl, and her family in a struggle against an evil enchanter trying to force the Weisses out of their home. This fourth book in the Lewis Barnavelt series has been ably finished by Brad Strickland, and possesses the same traits of creepiness and gothic horror that characterize Bellairs' other works for children. Details of Pennsylvania Dutch life, including hexes and scattered bits of German (always used in a way such that their meaning is readily apparent) add flavor to the proceedings. Plucky heroine Rose Rita will be a good role model for middle school girls, and this book is sure to appeal to middle schoolers with a taste for magic or gothic literature.

Join Rose Rita and Mrs.Zimmerman on a spine tingling adventure. I did, and it was exellent! This book is a masterpiece that deserves to be on the classic's shelf. It is also John Bellair's best book. Brad Strickland did a wonderful job completing it. Enjoy the book!

I have read many Jonothan Bellairs books, and this was just one of my favorites. It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I love reading about all of Bellairs' wonderfull and electric charactors, and this was a fantastic story, like all of them.
