Overview

WHEN KINGDOMS CLASH, EVERY CROWN WILL BE TARNISHED BY THE BLOODY PRICE OF AMBITION.

A bastard lord leads a rebellion against his tyrant king — and must live with the consequences of victory.

A royal widow plots to win her daughter's freedom from the ambitious lords who would control them both.

An orphaned prince sets his eyes on regaining his father's stolen throne.

And two brothers, divided by ambition, will learn that the greater the power, the more dangerous the game.

A masterful tale of the thirst for power and the cost of betrayal. Epic fantasy at its bloodiest, action-packed best.

I was really looking forward to this book, since I had read several of the authors other books, both under her own name and her pen name, K. E. Mills. She always struck me as an author who had a great grasp of making vivid, realistic characters you could sympathize with, even the villains. In fact, I think she writes some of the best villains in fantasy today. Anyway, I went in with high expectations. Not only were they met, they were shattered. This is an incredibly well written book, and is one of the best books I have ever read, of any genre, period. The story is expansive, set in a well developed world. The characters jump off the page, dragging you in with them. The villains are some of the best I've ever seen on the page, but they are doing the things they do for what seem legitimate reasons, and it's hard not to sympathize just a little. The protagonists are flawed, realistic characters, with realistic motivations. This is a gritty, hard hitting book, with well done action and battle scenes, political intrigue and family backstabbing. Any fans of Mark Lawrence, Jeff Salyards and Anthony Ryan will like this book. I recommend this book to all my friends and I recommend you try it too.

I loved this book. I've read multiple fantasy series and this ranks in the top ten. Can't wait for the next book.

This book was rich and complex. The characters were well developed and had depth. The book leaves you with lots of questions and looking forward to the second installment.

World building is Martinesque. Characters solid, and I agree with another reviewer the villians are excellent. Some parts in the book drag, especially when the author feels obligated to repeat previous details as if the reader is too stupid to remember key details. Could also do without all the profanity which is often more of an unneccesary filler, therefore lacking effectiveness. B'aint is the most annoying word I've ever read as well. In the end, the plot line is excellent, the cliff hanger good, and I'm looking forward to the next installment. Hopefully more detailed sex, less filler, and more sorcery subject material.

Aside from some difficulty due to the choice of language, the book was very good.
