Overview

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel.

It was the summer of my life.
I'd met the guy of my dreams.
Unfortunately, he was the son of my uppity employer—and very much off-limits.
But Gavin was a rebel. He knew his mother would disown him if she found out about us; in his eyes, we just had to be careful.
He never treated me as his mother did—like hired help.
Instead, Gavin put me on a pedestal and loved me harder than I'd ever been loved in my life.

What a summer it was.
Until it all ended—badly.

I was never supposed to see Gavin again.
That didn't stop me from thinking about him every day for ten years.
I knew little about his life now, just that he was an entrepreneur living an ocean away.

When a twist of fate had me working again in the very place our love affair started a decade earlier, I knew it was only a matter of time before I might see him again.
But I wasn't prepared.
What if he hated me?
What if he loved someone else now?
I wasn't prepared for all the unknowns.

And most of all, I wasn't prepared for today to be the day he came back.

Excellent read from start to finish! True love and a pinch of second chances, can't get any better than this. Raven and Gavin see has a ring to it! You can fall in love at an early age and call it true love. When hearts are broken and you tend to heal those cracks. That's a second chance. These two might have come from different sides of the tracks, but they were on the same level. There was a wee bit of drama which I love, and once all truths were revealed, life went on. Gavin did the most manly thing and Raven had to wait and see. Let's not forget about Weldon!! He was a butthole however I believe he made up for that towards the end of the book. Love can survive time, just as long as you catch each other in the middle!!

Loved Raven and Gavin's story! Their story certainly wasn't an easy one and I LOVED how well written their story was. It took me on an emotional journey in the best possible way! I loved Gavin's brother Weldon! I don't want to give anything away so all I will say is this is a MUST READ!!

A second chance romance, The Day He Came Back by Penelope Ward is one you don't want to miss! Drawn in from page one, I swept through this book. The story begins with Raven in the present. She is the nurse assigned to care for Mr. Gunther Masterson who suffers from dementia and thinks that Raven is her mother Renata. See, Raven used to work for the Masterson family along side her mother. What she never expected was to see the love of her life, the love who got away after 10 years... Gavin Masterson, Gunther's eldest son. And that's when the fun begins. We're taken 10 years into the past and we witness two young people from two different worlds fall in love. It's so pure and wonderful yet heartbreaking. For a moment there, I felt this one would have a different ending. Once you get to the second part of the story when Gavin and Raven are older, you see how much things have changed and the obstacles and secrets our h/H have to navigate. At times emotional with a forbidden, angsty feel, I enjoyed this novel immensely. Penelope once again has done a phenomenal job. This hero is bound to steal your heart! And enough said about that book cover #yum.

The Day He Came Back by Penelope Ward is yet another emotionally charged, sexy romance from a must-read author. A second chance romance that is about so much more than JUST second chances. Told in dual points of view between Raven and Gavin, this story had me hooked from the first page. Raven may come from the other side of the bridge in Palm Beach but she knows her worth. Gavin is tired of the haughty expectations of his mother and wants nothing more than to be happy, and Raven makes him happy. But when social standing becomes more important than her own sons happiness the relationship that was just getting started between Raven and Gavin implodes. Fast forward ten years and it is sheer cosmic fate that has Raven and Gavin back in the same house at the same time. Will they ever be able to get past their history and work out their differences or is this meeting just a chance to properly say goodbye. Emotional, heart-breaking, romantic, sexy, powerful - as always - Loved it! Enjoy!

3.5-4 Stars The Day he Came Back was a sweet second chance romance. Gavin and Raven come from completely different backgrounds. Gavin comes from a family with money and there are certain expectations that he has to live up to. Gavin is the complete opposite of his elitist and judgmental mother and his pompous, egotistical younger brother, but Gavin is tired of the their lifestyle and how they treat others that don't have money. When he first meets Raven he is taken by her beauty but he also loves how real and down to earth she is. Raven is a breath of fresh air and a welcome change from all of the stereotypical rich and materialistic girls Gavin has grown up with. Raven can't help but question Gavin and his intentions, but once she is able to his true heart she sees what a kind, humble and respectful person he is. Even though Gavin's mother has made it clear she would never approve of him dating Raven, they spend the whole summer getting to know each other, and they fall and fall hard. Both Raven and Gavin can't imagine a life without one another and begin to plan a future together. But life gets in the way, and when cruel obstacles and loyalties drive them apart, they are both left shattered and heart broken. I enjoyed the chemistry between Gavin and Raven, but there were parts of the story that felt rushed. I was taken aback by a few of Raven's secrets, secrets that felt a little misplaced in the story and left me confused. Overall it was a sweet story.

Gavin and Raven are from two different worlds, with Raven’s mother being the hired help for Gavin’s rich family. When they meet in their early twenties, the attraction is immediate and a whirlwind affair quickly ensues. Forced apart for the next ten years, sparks fly when they are unexpectedly reunited in this fabulous second chance love story. Penelope is a master of telling the story of a dysfunctional family and of love that never dies. The side characters were intriguing and I would love to hear more of their stories. There were some heavy situations, but they were handled in a way that didn’t overpower the story with sadness. The pace was flawless, the love was real, and there couldn’t have been a more perfect happily ever after.

Oh the angst and twisted heartbreak...I seriously couldn’t wait to find out how these two estranged lovers were going to deal with their reunion. Their young love was so sad and tragic. I didn’t even know what to think about their breakup. Why oh why!!!! To be apart ten years and then surprisingly brought back together. I wish Raven has been a stronger heroine. She definitely was a sweet, honest and caring girl. My favorite qualities in my lead girl but I wanted her way more feisty at times. Gavin...I loved his rugged good looks and willingness to fight for what he wanted. But then sometimes I wanted him to work a little harder. I love second chances though and these two had that deep connection that makes you swoon. The trademark of a Penelope Ward book that I look for every single read. Swoonworthy heroes that sweep the heroine off her feet and spoil her for any other men, Le sigh.

I’m going to go on the record and say that ‘The Day He Came Back’ is one of Penelope Ward’s greatest novels!! I’d say ‘one of her most epic love stories’. I LOVE the “Second Chance” trope. She nailed this. Truly an emotional story told through years of misunderstands and heart aches. Gavin is a true book boyfriend, and one of her best Hero’s. Raven………well I adored her. My heart hurt for her so….Their story just completely breaks your heart. God did I cry. Also, it must be said. The secondary characters totally rocked and made this whole story just come alive with laughter. And sadness. This book was packed with smart dialogue. You will fall in love with Gavin and Raven from the start. If ever you wondered if this book should be a first read for Ward, do not hesitate. It’s not only just one of my favorites, it definitely will be re-read a bunch of times!

Another addicting read by the fabulous Penelope Ward! I just love, love, love Second Chance Romances and enjoyed the twist of the heroine being in a different type of employment than I am used to. Raven begins as the help for the estate and quickly catches someones eye... The secondary characters are a great addition to the story along with the underlining plot twists that keep you coming back for more in this story.

*FOUR STARS* -ARC Provided by Author The Day He Came Back by Penelope Ward was a moving second chance romance. Gavin comes from wealth and Raven is the housekeeper’s daughter. They have an instant connection when Gavin comes home from college for the summer. Gavin is so down to earth and connects with Raven whom everyone else treats as hired help. They are both so down to earth and caring for one another, but Gavin’s mother Ruth does not want them together. Raven’s mother Renata is stricken with an illness and needs medical assistance. Ruth exploits this and suddenly Raven breaks up with Gavin leaving him mad and heartbroken. Ten years later, they reconnect and still have the connection and love that they once had for one another. After many obstacles, they find their way back to each other. Love that this story is told from both sides and that Part one is the before and part 2 is the after of their story. Makes for flawless reading and understanding. 4 stars !!!
I LOVE STORY TIME Book Blog 24 days ago
What can I say? Penelope Ward writes these stories that make me feel ALL the emotions! I laugh, I cry, I cringe, I gulp, I LOVE! I don’t know how she does it, but she does it again and again. I get so emotionally invested in her stories and characters that I struggle with letting go once the story ends. I absolutely loved this book. I love how this author always gives her characters just a little something that makes them fun and likable. For example, Gavin and his music. It contributed so much to his personality. I adored him and Raven. One of my favorite couples! That being said, excuse me while I go and scream from the proverbial rooftops... THE DAY HE CAME BACK IS A MUST READ! ♥ Review by Lys

Omg!! Ravin!! I absolutely loved this sweet, second chance romance!! This book had everything, a little humor, a bit of sadness and so much love! I absolutely loved Gavin and Raven’s story!! They had to endure so much to finally get back to each other!! This story definitely had a more serious vibe than some of Penelope’s previous stories and I loved it!! 5+ stars all the way!! Can’t wait to see what Penelope has in store for us next!!

Where does one begin to describe a masterpiece of words???? This book has so many emotions that I literally laughed out loud at times...and shamelessly shed tears...this book was EVERYTHING!!! Gavin was so swoony that it hurt...Raven was so relatable that I honestly felt like I was experiencing every single feeling, action, and thought that she had. When Penelope typed “The End” on this book...I hope she did a mic drop. She has completely blown me away...in the most amazing way. Well played Mrs. Ward.

Rich boy and daughter of the house keeper second chance romance book that will grab you and won't let you go until the end. This book is way more than what the blurb. I found myself on an emotional turmoil, Gavin and Raven story is one that will touch you deep. The audiobook narrated by Andi Arndt and Sebastian York couldn't be more perfect. I know it's a guaranteed audio with this couple but seems this story had them reach another level, the emotions where perfectly portrayed by both narrators, you could feel the characters hearts as your own, I think it wouldn't have been easy to act the raw emotions this books has without having your own touched, so I can only say this book should be a contender for an audiobook award.

I love second chance/first love romances and this one hit the spot. While I still have to get used to how Penelope has her characters talk sometimes, its still always an enjoyable and emotional read. Strong characters that are still able to hold their own even while things are crap. Situations arise while love grows and the story just continues to gain strength along with the characters. Gavin and Raven's love story is sweet, heartbreaking and absolutely wonderful!

I'm going to start by saying I was in tears the last 30% of this book. The two main characters are Gavin and Raven. Against all odd these two fall in love over the course of one summer. Unfortunately, there is a dark secret that keeps these two apart for 10 years. I love how Penelope took the time to delve into these characters. It made the ending that much sweeter.

Omg!!! I could not put this book down!! Gavin and Raven’s story is heartbreaking because of their desire to be together but circumstances keep them apart. After years of being separated from each other’s lives, they are suddenly facing difficult circumstances and are forced back into each other’s world. And one of the last people you’d expect to show them the truth of their past, is exactly the person who does just that. Absolutely a great book that I loved so much!

This was one of the best stories I have read in quite awhile. This epic love story was beautifully told in a unique way. It totally pulled me in and it consumed me. The angst was palpable. Several pages I read and then re-read as it had so much feeling. An absolute great story that I didn't want to end. "You can't give your heart to someone when it belongs to someone else." - RAVEN ALL. THE. FEELS.

OMG! Raven and Gavin’s story was so bittersweet. It makes my heart so happy when they eventually found their way back to each other and happiness.
