This is the only compact, portable, and user-friendly field guide the novice or experienced birder needs to identify birds in the field in the diverse habitats found in Costa Rica. It features descriptions and illustrations of all 903 species definitely known from Costa Rica, including pelagics and species regular to Cocos Island. Fifty-six of these species are placed in a "Rarities" section that includes accidentals, rarer pelagics, and species that have not been reported in more than twenty years. The detailed full-color illustrations show identifying features—including plumage differences among males, females, and juveniles—and views of birds in flight wherever pertinent.

Robert Dean has supplied more than 360 new illustrations, including sixty-four species that are illustrated for the first time in this edition. These include recent additions to the country list, pelagic species, Cocos Island species, and all accidentals recorded from the Costa Rican mainland. Range maps and nomenclature have been updated for this edition, which also has a new user-friendly organizational scheme and an alphabetical quick-find index of groups on the inside back cover.

I just returned from my 18th trip to Costa Rica. I have been birding there since 1983 and have used the Stiles and Skutch since it came out in 1989. I had used it so much that it was dog-eared and pretty beat up, so I decided to get a new field guide. When I looked over the Garrigues and Dean book I was delighted to see location maps. That was the one thing lacking in the Stiles book; no maps. You had to read the description statements to find that information, and those statements often were on other pages, not the page with the bird picture. This new guide has it all right in front of you. As a birder I know location is very important and it is helpful to see if a possible sighting could actually be found in that particular area. It's not 100% accurate but it is most probable. It was easy using this guide. The setup is great and agrees with most birding field guides. The drawings are accurate and carefully done. The size of the guide is easy to carry (smaller than previous guide). The book also held up being thrown into a backpack, carried on a raft and various boats, and being opened many, many times. I would recommend this field guide to the various birders who often travel with me.

As the author of a travel guide to Costa Rica (Explore Costa Rica, Fifth Edition), which covers flora and fauna (and especially birds) in detail, I can attest that this is a great book to take with you and makes a superb companion to Explore Costa Rica (which will be a great help with the rest of your trip).

This book is excellent for learning Costa Rican birds. The format is quite handy and economically provides all the information you need to distinguish similar species. One of the best field guides I've seen ever.
