Overview

A stoner, an Instagram model, a Czech oligarch, and a missing unicorn.  Nick Fox and Kate O'Hare have their work cut out for them in their weirdest, wildest adventure yet in this latest entry in the New York Times bestselling series by Janet and Peter Evanovich.

Straight arrow FBI Agent Kate O'Hare always plays by the rules.  Charming Con Man Nicholas Fox makes them up as he goes along.  She thinks he's nothing but a scoundrel.  He thinks she just needs to lighten up.  They're working together to tackle the out-of-bounds cases ordinary FBI agents can't touch.  And, their relationship?  Well, there hasn't been so much explosive chemistry since Nitro was introduced to Glycerin.
Next on the docket: The mysterious disappearance of the Silicon Valley billionaire, known as the Big Kahuna.  Kate's been assigned to find him but no one seems particularly keen on helping.  His twenty-six year old adult actress wife-turned Instagram model wife and his shady Czech business partner are more interested in gaining control of his company.  For that they need a dead body not a living Kahuna.
The only lead they have is the Kahuna's drop-out son, who's living the dream in Hawaii - if your dream is starting your day with the perfect wave and ending it with a big bowl of weed.  To get close to the Kahuna's son, Kate and Nick go undercover as a married couple in the big wave, bohemian, surfer community of Paia, Maui.  Living a laid back, hippy-dippy lifestyle isn't exactly in Kate's wheelhouse, but the only thing more horrifying is setting up house with Nick Fox, even if he does look pretty gnarly on a longboard.  If they don't catch a break soon, waves aren't the only thing she's going to be shredding (or bedding).

Like an alternate universe of the previous books. Characters are off. Dialogue is stilted. Depth of relationship between the characters does not pick up where it left off. Lacking the creativity in the con and support characters found in previous books. If this was the first book in the series, I would not have bought the second.

Extremely disappointing!! Kate is nothing but a lackey doing whatever Nick says. she's always asking him what to do next, she can't seem to think on her own. Her dad is nothing but a joke who just wants to blow things up. Very little of the chemistry that was building with Kate and Nick in previous books. Bring back Lee Goldberg! Will not be reading any other books from this series.

The Nick character changed a lot in this book, unfortunately he's not as classy as he was in the previous books.

This one was weird and out of sorts. It took 180 pages to get to the big con. Before that it was just a bunch of ridiculous, over the top scenarios. And also, the characters were off. Especially the relationship between Kate and nick. And also nick was the one who kept saving the day? All the sudden he’s possibly former military? No. He’s a charming, smooth talker who can hold his own. We didn’t get any of that. We got a smart mouth nick running around like he’s captain America. This was not in style with the rest of the books, the relationships and characters didn’t line up with the previous books, and honestly, it was just a let down. I would give the other five in this series 5/5, which is probably why I’m being lenient and giving this one 3/5. Very disappointed.

This is the first book written by Janet and company that I have not enjoyed. I'm quite certain that I have read everything available through Barnes and Noble for either my e-reader or in paperback so I don't think I need to add anything else to my review.

NOT The REAL Fox and O'Hare!! The characters in this book have little to do with the persona's of the Kate, Nick, and Jake characters in the previous books. No effort is made to continue the story of the previous books in this series. It is as if the new co-aurthor decided to start over, and is now writing another version of Stephanie and Lula from the Stephanie Plum series. The writing style is very poor for someone who is published as a professional writer. I have been reading Janet Evanovich's books for about 20 years. I generally like her work. The Fox and O'Hare series is my favorite. After reading this book, I am left to wonder if Janet Evanovich had anything to do with this one; or if she even read it before it was published. I'm also curious about how much input she had in the previous books in this series. Bring Back Lee Goldberg!! To Barnes and Noble: Repair the review system for this book so that the reviews can be read easily.

Very disappointed in the book. I was really looking forward to it and have been a big fan of this series. One of the things I really love about the series is the sexual tension between Nick and Kate which is totally missing in this book. There is a lack of depth in all the characters. Cosmos is a distraction and an unnecessary addition. Not sure how this got published without more feedback about the characters and lack complexity in the story.

I was VERY disappointed with this book. It was nothing like the rest of the series. I actually had to stop reading a few chapters in to see if it was the same series/author. That is when I discovered that Janet Evanovich's son co-wrote this book instead of Lee Goldberg. I only continued to finish the book so that I could give a fair and accurate review (and I never write reviews). It was as if this book was a college freshmen's writing assignment. It felt like the author was given a short synopsis of the characters and THIS was what they came up with. The characters, relationships, and dialogue were nothing like that of the previous books in the series. Everything was immature and underdeveloped. I will only give this series another try if there is a different co-author or if Lee Goldberg comes back.

I don’t know what happened to these characters, perhaps it’s the new writer Peter Evanovich vs. Lee Goldberg, but what happened to the banter, the chemistry and the biggest question the ROMANCE!  Bit of a spoiler here but at the end of book 5 The Pursuit, Kate and Nick FINALLY get together, and it was EVERYTHING.  So I was looking forward to going into a post-hookup/romance/fling what have you in The Big Kahuna.  But instead of addressing it, TBK plays it off like Kate and Nike never happened. That’s at least how I read it.  You can imagine my reaction, WTF.  Kate and Nick were coming to terms with pretty big feeling for each other.  Then comes TBK, and everything is erased.  There is mild flirting but all the character, and emotional building are gone, again WTF.   There’s action and danger, but it just didn’t have the pizzazz as books in the past.  I did laugh a lot a Cosmo. Nick’s influencer, influencer, that is legal-ish is spot on for the current times.  I missed the crew, and where was the con? Scott Brick was once again brilliant, and I love his narration.  This is a tough call for me.  Because I did enjoy it but it was just disappointing on levels I wasn’t expecting.  I am rating The Big Kahuna 3 Boundless Stars.

Unlikely duo FBI agent Kate O’Hare and former (maybe) conman Nick Fox have been asked to look for a tech billionaire known to pretty much everyone as The Big Kahuna. He disappeared a few days ago, but Kate and Nick are shocked to find that both his wife and his business partner are already hoping to have him declared dead. Kate and Nick aren’t willing to declare him dead yet; they think he might be hiding out in Hawaii. With Kate’s father and Cosmo, another FBI agent, tagging along, they set out to see if they can find him. However, it appears someone wants The Big Kahuna dead. Can they find him in time? Or will they lead the killers right to him? The last book in this series was three years and a different co-author ago, and it shows. Nick and Kate are shadows of themselves, with Kate going to Nick for plans on everything instead of them working as partners. Their romantic relationship has gone back several books, too, and yet they don’t appear to be hiding the fact that they work together professionally. Kate’s dad is just a caricature now, and the new characters are one note jokes, per se, which makes spending so much time with them painful. While the plot does include a couple of small cons, it is nowhere near as elaborate and therefore fun as the previous books. Really, any group of characters could have been the stars of this plot. The pacing is uneven, especially early on when we get travelogues of Hawaii. We could have easily cut 30 pages without noticing at all, and in a book that already reads short, that is saying something. I did get hooked as I went along, but I think the flaws would have been more frustrating if I hadn’t been able to knock the book out in a couple of days. I borrowed this book from my local library, but I’m not sure even that price (free) will be enough to get me to come back if Nick and Kate have any more adventures.

In THE BIG KAHUNA, Fox and O’Hare return in an action packed thrill ride of fun. I can never get enough of this fabulous g-woman & her con. Definitely5 Star!
