CD

Overview

The Kiri Te Kanawa entry in Universal Music's 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection series of discount-priced best-ofs is a modest, risk-averse effort that includes both well-known opera arias performed by the New Zealand diva from the works of Mozart, Johann Strauss II, and Verdi, some art and sacred songs (notably both the Bach and Schubert versions of "Ave Maria"), and a few tracks that might be recognizable to an audience beyond opera lovers, such as Rodgers & Hammerstein's "You'll Never Walk Alone"; "O, Mio Babbino Caro" from Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, heard on the soundtrack of A Room with a View; and "Let the Bright Seraphim" from Handel's Samson, which Te Kanawa sang at the 1981 wedding of British Prince Charles and Lady Diana. Samplers like this seem a little silly when applied to classical artists, whom most aficionados prefer to hear at length, but this is a reasonable collection of Te Kanawa's career highlights.
