Most of us are familiar with the story in 2 Samuel 11-12 that tells the story of David and Bathsheba but it is through this book that I have begun to better comprehend this story. Bathsheba experienced shame, fear, and great suffering and I have a whole new understanding of her dilemna. She knew that the penalty for refusing to answer the King's summons could be severe and her husband wasn't there to protect her. She went and we know what occurred but have we ever really considered what she truly felt? I feel sure that her fear, shame, and grief was overwhelming but what about the anger? She surely struggled in her ability to forgive King David. Author Natalie Chambers Snapp has done an admirable job in sharing modern-day experiences and comparing them to David and Bathsheba's story. The Bathsheba Battle has twelve chapters, among them Turning Away from Shame; Turning Away from Anger; Turning Away from Comparison; Turning Away from Fear; Permission to Grieve; Forgiving Others--- and Yourself; and Turning to Hope. At the end of each of these chapters she has chosen appropriate scripture for Turning to God and listed Questions for Reflection or Discussion to help us further expand our understanding. This book is filled with many nuggets of wisdom and many wonderful statements and I especially love her reminder that 'David and Bathsheba both could have given their anger permission to turn them away from God. Instead, they chose to seek God rather than run from Him.' This is a book that touches on many of the human emotions that we experience as humans: shame, anger, fear, grieving, forgiveness, and hope. The Bathsheba Battle is perfect for personal bible study but I can see it being used in a woman's Bible study group. I received a complimentary digital copy from the author but I am not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts.
The Bathsheba Battle is well written and relevant with an eye opening look into the life of King David and Bathsheba. Natalie was able to shed light on Bathsheba’s story and lend insight into her life and the struggles she must have faced. I have never taken the time to dig deeper into what Bathsheba must have walked through and the struggles she must have faced. Natalie helped me take a look at the process of walking through trauma, grief, and shame. She also shares the hope that comes from choosing to survive and heal from the situations life can throw our way. I believe everyone can benefit from this book and the life lessons it shares.
I really enjoyed this book. While the story of Bathsheba is one I’m familiar with, I’ve never quite understood it or appreciated it like I do now after reading this book. The author digs deep into Bathsheba’s story, bringing to light specific details and customary ways from that time period, a lot of which I’m sure many people are unaware of, that help the reader to better understand the significance of certain events that happen. Knowing these details made the story even more powerful to me. Throughout the book, the author discusses pain and suffering, shame, anger, comparison, fear, grieving, self-care, forgiveness, and hope, and then relates each one to Bathsheba’s story. We see how Bathsheba responded to each of these situations. How, instead of being defeated, she became a woman who persevered and did not give up, a woman of strong faith and courage. By the end of the book, the reader can see how Bathsheba’s story is a wonderful testimony of God’s promise to make beauty from ashes, and that while we may not always be able to control our circumstances, we can choose how we react, especially when life takes an unexpected turn. This book can be read alone, but there are discussion questions at the end of each chapter, so it would make a great study for a group of women. I received a copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are my own.
1 star I was really looking forward to reading/studying this book and the life of Bathsheba. The author Natalie Chambers Snapp really started off well and I was thoroughly enjoying the book until she started using The Message as her Bible source. The Message is certainly NOT an accurate Bible translation and anyone who uses it as their Bible source has discernment issues. I just cannot trust an author or anything she says while using The Message. I was hoping it would be just a one-time thing but each time she gave a Bible source it was from The Message, so I gave up reading the Bathsheba Battle. I cannot recommend this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. The views given are my own.
This book spoke to me personally. The Bathsheba Battle is written by Natalie Chambers Snapp. The story of David and Bathsheba is one we all know. Natalie really brought Bathsheba to life and allowed me to have more insight to what Bathsheba went through due to David’s sin. I felt as though I came alongside Bathsheba and experienced all the stuff!! She went from pain, suffering, guilt, shame, grief, and anger to perseverance and forgiveness. Bathsheba lived all of these emotions! Natalie used the story of Bathsheba to illustrate how we also, in our own lives, walk through these seasons of emotions! Her book encourages women, with wisdom from scripture, as they journey through the hard stuff in life! At the end of each chapter, she includes scripture references and discussion questions. This book would be a wonderful group study for women. I highly recommend this to read. #bathsheebabattle
