"Talk about a nostalgia trip! Open Kristal Leebrick’s new book, Thank You for Shopping , at any page and feel yourself—if you are of a certain age, anyway—drifting back to the days when Donaldson's, Dayton's, Powers and—sigh of sighs—Young-Quinlan were the places to shop. Not only for fashionable clothing, shoes, and accessories (Dayton's Oval Room, anyone?), but in many cases also for housewares, home décor, appliances, and so much more. Those holiday window displays! Dayton's eighth-floor flower shows!"
"Not only are the old-school photos and anecdotes a fascinating trip back in time, but Leebrick also explores the deeper impact of these department stores—more than just a place to find your new outfit or see the latest in European fashion trends, they became social centers and popular gathering places that put on school dances, music performances and ballets, orchestra concerts, shows, and hosted authors and actors that were touring through the area."
Twin Cities Agenda
"A wonderful look back at the history of retail in a state thatcontinuesto shapeitsfuture."
Eric Dayton, founder and CEO of Askov Finlayson
Throughout the twentieth century, department stores ruled the retail landscapes of downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul. More than just shopping centers, stores like Dayton's, Powers, Donaldson's, Young-Quinlan, the Emporium, and the Golden Rule were centers of social life. From the legendary Dayton's Christmas displays to celebrating a special occasion at Schuneman's River Room, the department store was a destination for generations of Minnesotans, within the Twin Cities and beyond. In Thank You for Shopping , author Kristal Leebrick presents the history and stories behind Minnesota's great department stores, offering a lively trip back to the glory days. Abundantly illustrated with vintage photos, postcards, advertisements, and artwork, the book explores the experience of shoppers and employees alike. Readers will revel in the fun, the fashion, and the thrill of discovery these stores provided. The book also includes a chapter dedicated to the signature dishes—with recipes, menus, and photos—of the stores' esteemed dining establishments. And looking beyond the Twin Cities, Leebrick tells of beloved, locally owned stores in Brainerd (O’Brien's), Winona (Choate's), Duluth (Freimuth's), and other Minnesota cities and towns. Thank You for Shopping is a nostalgic trip back for anybody who remembers the service, style, and charm of Minnesota's late, great department stores.

Here's a review of my purchase: Item arrived damaged and I haven't been able to take to a B&N store for exchange. This is not acceptable. It appears the package was dropped on it's corner edge and as a result the book inside has a damaged cover. I realize this is the fault of the carrier and not B&N but wanted you to know it happened. I'm sure the store will approve an exchange. The order process was great, the product looks interesting but as it arrived damaged I was not able to give it as intended as a gift yet.
