The Amulet series is about a young girl named Emily who receives a gift from her great grandfather, Silas, an amulet that contains magical powers. In this edition of the series, the Voice in Emily’s amulet takes over the powers and turns them evil, trapping her in the Void. Her brother, Navin, must learn to pilot ships in the alternate world the amulet teleports them to. Emily and Navin find friends and enemies along their journey to stop the elf king and shadow monsters from taking over the galaxy. Can Emily find the strength within herself to regain control over her amulet? My favorite part of this book is when Emily’s amulet turns her into a flaming Phoenix and wreaks havoc on the town of Alledia. I wondered if Emily knew the true power that her stone contained. My favorite character is Vigo, an old, wise man who also wields an amulet. He has mastered control of his amulet and guides Emily on her journey. I give this book four stars because there were too many characters and too many adventures going on at once. But, there was also a nice element of magic mixed in. I recommend this book for kids ages 9+ because it is a little bit hard to follow. If you like action, adventure, and magic, you are going to love this book! Reviewed by Bianca M., Age 9, Denver Mensa
