Overview

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER:

You're not supposed to want the one who torments you.

When my stepbrother, Elec, came to live with us my senior year, I wasn't prepared for how much of a jerk he'd be.

I hated that he took it out on me because he didn't want to be here.
I hated that he brought girls from our high school back to his room.
But what I hated the most was the unwanted way my body reacted to him.

At first, I thought all he had going for him were his rock-hard tattooed abs and chiseled face. But things started changing between us, and it all came to a head one night.

Then, just as quickly as he'd come into my life, he was gone back to California.

It had been years since I'd seen Elec.

When tragedy struck our family, I'd have to face him again.

And holy hell, the teenager who made me crazy was now a man that drove me insane.

I had a feeling my heart was about to get broken again.

Stepbrother Dearest is a standalone novel.

Many of us have had times in our lives when a person who you know very little about, shows up in your life and inexplicably becomes the center of your world. A new kid in class, somebody new in the neighborhood... That can be good and that can be bad. Good because you sometimes experience a jolt of excitement that invigorates you, bad because of the potential fear of the unkown. As I devoured Penelope Ward's latest book, STEPBROTHER DEAREST, that's how I felt about Greta. Greta was reacting to her sexy, smart, tattooed stepbrother, Elec, who came to stay with her and her family during their senior year of high school. Greta and Elec didn't grow up together, they weren't blood related, and even though Elec was constantly teasing her and being rude, she couldn't deny their attraction, and ultimately neither could he. Their time together as teenagers was short lived, but their true connection could not be denied. Brought together by tragedy and tricky situations years later, Elec and Greta needed to face the fact that they shared a tether that could never be broken, even though both had moved on with their lives. Stepbrother Dearest isn't a story just about "taboo" and "what would the neighbors think", it is a story about finding yourself, accepting what is in your heart, knowing what is best for yourself and perhaps somebody new in your life. A story about bringing out the best in someone, and making each other shine! It is a story about taking risks and not being afraid to make yourself happy. It is a story about seeing somebody for who they really are, even in darkness and accepting them. Penelope Ward has written an incredible story about a scarred, pained boy, who had so many hard layers covering his heart and soul that he couldn't see the wonderful person he was underneath. Penelope Ward has written an incredible story about a girl who was scared of who she was, and who she was becoming, but with her depth, intuition, humor and lust took a chance that changed her life, and helped someone important to her change his too. Penelope Ward has written a great story filled with parents with problems, friends that have their quirks, awkward high school situations we can all relate to, devotion, hardships, and so much sexy steam I practically needed a cold shower after reading it!! Ultimately, Penelope Ward has written a story filled with many amazing, funny, endearing, hot, angry, hurt, loving, cute, memorable moments that build, and blaze a trail that leads these characters home, which is exactly how I felt when I read this book. Home.

I wasn't sure if I was gong to enjoy this book when I purchased it, but I can happily say I loved it! Not only do you get a great story, but it is a stand alone book! This is the complete story. You don't need to buy another book to get your HEA, it is included! The story is about Greta and Elec. Their parents are married and now they find themselves step siblings. They are meeting for the first time, so they don't have a long standing relationship. Boy to sparks fly! I highly recommend you read their story. ENJOY!!!

The idea behind this was good - and it definitely got better as you went.  However the writing towards the beginning was pretty juvenile.

This book held my heart and anticipation held my sleep. Quick read due to addiction to the story. You just can't stop read until the end. Reality of storyline helped make this read feel like i could actually have witnessed it with my eyes. Applause to the Author!!!! Penelope has a true talent with words!

I absolutely loved this book. It captivated me and I compulsively devoured it in less than a day. This book was totally different, it has been a while since I have read a hot romance story with a different story line, something different and refreshing. Instead of having a wealthy man with killer looks who falls for the oh so innocent main character, we get a step bother and step sister (who are not related by blood for the record) and a past that threatens to keep them from being together while they fall for each other.. The story was just amazing I wish there was more to this amazing book, I cried I laughed and I threw the book at what point! The ending was perfect in my opinion, but the author should have elaborated more, just because I just can't let it go. I now get fleeting memories of certain events that occur in the book , and I find myself sighing out of nowhere. It is that good!!!

Only book I've kinda liked is My Skylar and that one made me uncomfortable with the cheating. This one left me wanting desperately to to beat the crap out of Elec. Douchebag. Yeah, his childhood was crap, but so are LOTS of other people's childhoods. Yet they manage to NOT playing head games with their "loved" ones. I'm sending a genera shout out to all those authors out there who write these heros who need to have an excuse to act like d___ks. You get ONE pass to say awful hurtful things, but if you make it a pattern, there's nothing "heroic" about the character. He's just a d__k.

I do not have the words to express how profoundly this book touched my heart. I do love the stepbrother trope so was excited to get this book but I can honestly say that it is so totally not what I was expecting but in a really, really good way. Elec arrived to stay with his dad, Randy, who is now married to Greta's mom. Randy and Elec's relationship is, to put it mildly, strained. Randy is ridiculously horrible to and about Elec. Greta does her best to be kind to Elec and even protects him from his father but she is completely confused by his behaviour towards her. He, in turns, goes out of his way to push her buttons or is soft and gentle and genuine. Who is the real Elec or is he someone in-between. I think the thing that touched me the most is that even at such a young age Greta recognised something in Elec that needed a gentle touch and affirmation. Their friendship was amazing and seeing Elec start to let down that hard exterior of his warmed my heart no end but then it came to an end when he had to go home. Several years later they meet up again when they both have to attend a funeral. Greta soon realises that the love she felt for him has never gone away and is as strong as ever but there is a problem, he has moved on. Once I learned Elec's backstory my heart ached for him and I just couldn't understand how Randy could have treated him that way through no fault of his own or how Pilar could let her love for Randy allow it to happen. Can these two ever get their timing right or are they destined to be forever parted? Once I started this book I could simply not put it down and I never wanted the story to end. The epilogue told from Elec's point of view was perfect because that is the one thing I had missed throughout the book. Elec and his anagrams made me chuckle as it was just so him, so different and clever. I received a free copy of this book directly from the author and am leaving a voluntary review.

I'm new to Penelope Ward's books. I really enjoyed Elec and Greta's story. Love me some forbidden romance!! Their story was emotional, funny, angsty, and just full of chemistry. I'm excited to explore more of her books.

This was my very first Penelope Ward book and I was by no means disappointed. It sucked me in right away and made me want to know what was going to happen next. Elec is a very complex and interesting character. I didn't know how to feel about him all the time. There were times I wasn't a huge fan and others that I loved him. In the end I loved him. He goes through a journey throughout this book and I enjoyed watching him become a better man. Greta is a huge reason that he becomes a better person. She helps him realize that he deserves the best and can accomplish whatever he puts his mind to. They're a good fit for one another. I liked that she didn't skip over their past and have us slowly learn about it throughout the book. I loved the end, but I really wish the book was longer. I felt like it could have benefited from a little bit more at the end. Other than that I really enjoyed it.

This book really surprised me! Not because it was amazing, not because the writing was unbelievable (so far the best writing of Penelope Ward’s Books that I’ve read), and not because it’s was steamy as hell! No, the reason it surprised me is that I’m used to reading a lot of friends to lovers story with Penelope Ward. Of course, I’m playing catch up with her books. I came to discover the awesomeness of Penelope Ward, and Penelope Ward/Vi Keeland, books!!! So maybe the friends to lovers books are more her recent books. But I sat down with this book thinking it would be a light, easy read. Boy was I wrong!! But, I was also unaware that I was about to read an absolutely amazing book!!! The story starts out as young people in high school, but in no way is it young adult reading. Elec comes to live in Greta’s home for the summer. He is the son of her mother’s husband...her stepbrother. She looks forward to the idea of having a brother, as an only child. When he walks in the door looking completely gorgeous with all his tattoos and piercings, she starts to have physical feelings that she would NOT have for a brother. She smiles warmly and says "I’m Greta. Nice to meet you." He said nothing. Then she told him he looked different than she pictured. He squinted at her and said, "And you look pretty....plain." Poor Greta wanted to disappear. Physically he was her dream and in every other way he was her nightmare. But there, of course, is so much more to the story. The characters in the book have SO MUCH DEPTH...ITS BEAUTIFUL!!!! So the book does eventually jump forward to when they are adults. So much happens to Elec and Greta in their lives. There is so much unsaid. I’m always screaming at these romance books...COMMUNICATE PEOPLE!!!! But this is what makes for such angst, emotion and drama, and I love every bit of it!!!! But the beautiful characters that Penelope creates are so endearing that they become rooted in your heart and you have a hard time letting them go when you move on to another book. And, personally, I’d say that in this book it has affected more than others. Just beautiful...
