James Blish's contribution to Star Trek literature is nothing to dismiss. Having written the novelization of the original series episodes, I believe this was his first completely original work within TOS. This is a quick, fun read compared to the typical Star Trek novel of today, which is generally three times the size of this novel. The characterizations are pretty dead on, which I expected given Blish's history with them. The one complaint I have is Scotty's accent. There were times that it read many things besides a Scott, including Russian ("leetle") and Jamaican ("mon"). That was confusing.
