Fleeing a mean stepfather in Texas, Billy-Boy arrives in South Florida with his mother and two sisters at the beginning of summer. Billy-Boy quickly befriends a local boy, Tim, and all is well until it becomes clear they both like the same girl, Mae Beth, the daughter of the local surf shop owner. Billy-Boy has to learn how to navigate new terrain, while struggling to overcome feelings about his stepfather. He is helped by the insights of an older teenager, known locally as "Shark Man," and Sonny, Mae Beth's father, who help him understand both the mysteries of the ocean and his inner self.

Shark Man is about one boy's summer finding his confidence after a rocky past. Billy, his mother and two sisters left Texas and moved to Florida after his step-father threatened his mother with a gun. When they arrive in Florida at his grandmother's vacation house, he quickly meets a local boy Tim who introduces him to the ocean and a love for surfing. As Billy tries to overcome what his step-father did, he is helped by a local teenager called the Shark Man and a local shop owner Sonny who shows him what a little confidence can do to a young man. I found this book to be a quick read but I loved every minute of it. Even though it was kind of a memoir of W. Nikola-Lisa's early life in florida, he wrote it in a way that it was easy for kids to not see it as just a memoir but as a adventure in learning surfing and dealing with growing up problems. With moments in there like learning to surf and finding his inner self, this book is sure to be a hit with youngsters who love reading about oceans and all the creatures that inhibit them! Thank You to W. Nikola-Lisa for telling your story in a enlightening way! I received this book from the Goodreads Giveaways in exchange for a honest review.
