Overview

In this gripping thriller from New York Times bestselling author Linda Castillo, a devastating murder exposes an Amish family’s tortured past.

The peaceful town of Painters Mill is shattered when an Amish grandmother is brutally murdered on an abandoned farm. When Chief of Police Kate Burkholder arrives on the scene, she learns that the woman’s seven-year-old granddaughter is gone, abducted in plain sight. Kate knows time is against her—the longer the girl is missing, the less likely her safe return becomes. The girl’s family is a pillar of the Amish community, well-respected by all. But Kate soon realizes they’re keeping secrets—and the sins of their past may be coming back to haunt them. What are they hiding and why?

Kate’s investigation brings her to an isolated Old Order Amish settlement along the river, a community where family is everything and tradition is upheld with an iron fist. But the killer is close behind, drawing more victims into a twisted game of revenge. Left behind at each new crime scene are cryptic notes that lead Kate to a haunting and tragic secret. What she uncovers threatens to change everything she thought she knew about the family she’s fighting for, the Amish community as a whole—and her own beliefs.

As time to find the missing girl runs out, Kate faces a harrowing choice that will test her convictions and leave one family forever changed.

What a tangled web we weave when we practice to deceive. Even when deception is supposed to be for good, it doesn’t work out that way. An Amish grandmother with two of her granddaughters is out picking walnuts on their neighbors abandoned farm. The grandmother is gruesomely murdered. One granddaughter is traumatized, the other is kidnapped. Now the story begins… Each chapter of the book begins with the number of hours the child has been missing. That adds to the tension. More people are attacked and the pin linking them all together isn’t realized until late in the book. The suspense is palpable. There is terror. There are secrets and lies. Most importantly, this secret is generated from people you’d never think would keep this kind of information from the authorities, especially with a child’s life on the line. In my opinion, this was one of the best books of the Kate Burkholder series. We get a glimpse into the lives of the people we’re familiar with at the Painter’s Mill police department. Kate’s love, Tomasetti, with his state resources is also featured prominently in this book. Jurisdictional challenges that face all police departments are also discussed. A fabulous addition to this series.

Another great 'Kate Burkholder' book. This book will take you in from the first page, its a tragic story of a couple who wants their baby back after thinking she was dead for many years. It's a book with a number of murders in the Amish community. Kate is on the clock because a little girl is missing, and the number of bodies is piling up! It is a story of people who think they know what the right thing to do is, but do they really? Suspense at its best! It was a hard book to put down, I can not wait for #12....

Shamed by Linda Castillo – 5 Stars Publisher: Minotaur Books ISBN: 9781250142863 I have read all of the books in the Kate Burkholder series. They have all been entertaining, but this is one of my favorites. The suspense in this well crafted murder kidnapping mystery begins in the first chapter and continues as the hours are counted in the search for a missing Amish girl. Though Kate, the sheriff of Painters Mill, left the Amish life, she has respect for those in the community. The Amish society is at the core of the story and their beliefs are treated with dignity and respect. Although sometimes dark, strange and misguided by the standards of today’s society, their choices follow their religious teachings and culture. I grew up near Lancaster, PA and had limited contact with the Amish. I am fascinated to learn about these people who lived near but by choice, removed from those outside their community. I absolutely enjoyed this book. “Couldn’t put it down” is a much used phrase, but for me it was true. It has a complex plot with a sheriff who doesn’t stop until she learns the truth. I am grateful for the opportunity to preview Shamed and look forward to reading more books in this series. Reviewer: Nancy

This time Kate Burkholder gets a full-length book to tell her story. (Kindle Single IN PLAIN SIGHT was released earlier this year.) An Amish grandmother is brutally stabbed to death and her granddaughter is kidnapped. Additional murders, mysterious deaths, and shootings pile up as Kate and paramour Tomasetti investigate. Unusual Amish-related events help this plot stand out. I love this book series set in Ohio Amish country. Police Chief Kate was raised Amish, so she has a unique advantage when dealing with the Amish during her investigations. I love the way Ms. Castillo writes the investigation scenes with such detail that I feel like I am right there with Kate. Terrific!

The author has done a wonderful job with this Amish mystery book. I’ve read several of her books, and this is, by far, my favorite. I have a love/hate feeling towards her books. They tend to be very graphically gory, which I hate, but the story is so great that you can’t put it down because you want to know how the mystery is going to be solved. This book is somewhat graphic, but nothing compared to some of her books that I have read in the past that would almost make you ill with the descriptions. Kate Burkholder, a woman raised Amish, but having left the religion, became Chief of Police in Painter’s Mill, OH. She finds that an Amish grandmother has been murdered and a child kidnapped. Time is so important in finding the child before she is murdered as well. Several people become victims of the murderer and Kate has to travel miles out of her jurisdiction to work on solving this horrible crime. Her knowledge of the Amish beliefs, as well as the language, help bridge the gap between the Amish and English and helps her in her investigations. I couldn’t put this book down until I had finished it. I highly recommend this to those who love to read books about the Amish with the added thriller aspect. Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read this book and give my honest review.
