Overview

Selected Stories of Philip K. Dick contains twenty-one of Dick’s most dazzling and resonant stories, which span his entire career and show a world-class writer working at the peak of his powers.

In “The Days of Perky Pat,” people spend their time playing with dolls who manage to live an idyllic life no longer available to the Earth’s real inhabitants. “Adjustment Team” looks at the fate of a man who by mistake has stepped out of his own time. In “Autofac,” one community must battle benign machines to take back control of their lives. And in “I Hope I Shall Arrive Soon,” we follow the story of one man whose very reality may be nothing more than a nightmare. The collection also includes such classic stories as “The Minority Report,” the basis for the Steven Spielberg movie, and “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale,” the basis for the film Total Recall. With an introduction by Jonathan Lethem, Selected Stories of Philip K. Dick is a magnificent distillation of one of American literature's most searching imaginations.

Philip K. Dick has done a super job of keeping his readers in suspense with these short sci-fi stories. If you enjoy "The Twilight Zone" you will probably like Philip K. Dick's short stories. Included in this work of short stories are the titles: "Adjustment Team" {which will be coming out as a movie in 2010, with the title "The Adjustment Bureau"}; "The Minority Report" {which was already made into a movie}; "Precious Artifact" and "Foster, You're Dead." Each short story has a fascinating protagonist along with a gripping storyline. This is fantastic science fiction for us sci-fi enthusiasts. It would be great to see more of these stories come to life on screen or just on a DVD. A favorable review: great for sci-fi fun and adventure, well developed tales of suspense.

I rented this book from my library and read it in a week. It's amazing. Dick is the master at conveying unique and thought provoking philisophical ideas through the medium of the short story. Many have criticized his lack of characters, but I found them all to be not only interesting, but the perfect tour guides to lead you through the strange worlds Dick has created. Overall, a great read, and worth buying if you enjoying sci-fi even a little.

I really enjoy this book. It's amazing to see the comparisons between the movies and pictures to PKD's work.

The handful of Dick's stories I've read were great, and I really have to find the time to read more.
