I admit it took me some time to get into this book at first, and at first I wasn’t really sure where it was going…… While the writing was beautiful, it felt a bit much and overwritten, when I would have preferred more action and dialogue and the “heart” of the novel sooner….. But the more I read the more I got into it, and thoroughly enjoyed this world and characters Pat O’Connor created. I liked the premise, but it really is the characters who come to life any pull the story forward wonderfully. I honestly feel like it could have been tightened some, and pared down the excessive descriptions at times and reduced the about of ‘lesser’ characters to feel tighter and more focused and fast paced, because some parts really dragged. But like I said, as it progressed I was more enraptured, and I look forward to reading more from Ms. O’Connor in the future as she is truly a gifted storyteller AND writer (not necessarily the same thing…)

well-written and very creative, “Secret Visions” from Pat O’Connor is an great read for fans of novels such as Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, etc, but with a more religions/spiritual/universal theme… but it holds its own with solid writing and plot structure, and an exciting, varied cast of colorful characters and plenty of supernatural and thrills to go around. There are some familiar tropes here (as with most paranormal), however, I feel Ms. O’Connor did a great job of bringing in a unique voice and making the story wholly her own, and giving it a fresh feel. I didn’t feel like I’ve read this million times before. A few things, I thought at times there was way too much “telling” instead of showing at times. Not too bad, but some parts dragged toward the middle. But an engrossing story with near perfect editing, and I’m ready for the next one!

for me “Secret Visions” by Pat O’Connor was a bit convoluted and ‘out there’ at times, and took a while to really get going and get me hooked, but I do think it kept getting better as it went along. I am a big fan of the genre, I appreciate the lengths the author went through to make her book stand out from much of the typical fare out there these days, even if for me it seemed to lose a bit of its focus at times. At times it felt overwritten with too much purple prose that weighed down the action, and I had to suspend my disbelief more than once. But I really liked the eclectic and diverse cast of characters, the complex, intelligent plotlines, and the overall message(s). Very positive and uplifting, and I felt that reading this was time well-spent. Will like to read more from Pat O’Connor in the future.

I’m not one for rehashing the plot (that’s what the summary is for on the book description page), but trust me when I say you’ve never read anything like this before! Fast-paced and action-packed, “Secret Visions” will take you through new concepts and perspectives in a YA adventure that you’ve never read before. I felt a ‘connection’ with each of these characters that I didn’t expect, and I thought the author’s narrative prose was some of the most authentic-feeling I’ve read in a while, the way she brought the scenes to life, and the attention to details. Very cool! Suitable for ages 12 and up – there are some ‘darker’ elements, but it is a clean read with a great message that all ages can appreciate.

well, “Secret Visions” by Pat O’Connor took me a while to read, but in the end I’d say it was worth it! I like how everything came together, and I enjoyed every page! Anyways, the themes and events that O’Connor writes about are done in a different way than I’m used to, very literary and metaphorical at times, which is a nice change of pace, especially for a YA action/adventure. O’Connor writes VERY well… very descriptive and strong and we feel like we are there almost like watching a movie or something. The editing could use a little cleaning up, but it wasn’t that bad. All the main characters are dynamic protagonists in their own way and really pull you into their world. The takeaway is satisfying, and overall a complex, almost surreal novel that pushes the boundaries of typical YA literature. Recommend!

when I read books, usually I either like the dialogue, and the narrative seems flat (or too telling and long-winded) or the prose is good, but the conversations seem contrived and stiff. But I loved how seamlessly everything flowed in “Secret Visions” with the balance between the two nicely as this made it feel authentic and well- paced, like we are watching a movie or something. It had it all, seriously…mystery, drama, friendship, betrayal, family life, enemies… takes us on an unforgettable, and ultimately fulfilling rollercoaster ride that I won’t soon forget. Hope the next one is ready soon!

4.5 stars At first I admit I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into in deciding to read this book. Because admittedly I do tend to lean towards more contemporary adult literature because I enjoy the message and life lessons. But I was intrigued by the description and the writing sample and the way that I felt an almost immediate connection to not only the interesting characters, but with the way that Pat O’Connor was writing them, (I thought Annie, Ming, Emir, and Father Sullivan were very well done) and I found myself just wanting to read more… and more… and more… and I couldn’t believe it when I realized I was totally hooked, and even totally enjoyed the exciting ‘paranormal’ and action scenes! But seriously, I felt transported to another world just by experiencing the lives of these incredible characters who are so true to life and authentic-feeling, yet unlike any I’ve met before. Like that the plot felt like it had a deeper meaning that we could all relate to and learn from, and I’m really glad I took a chance on this one…

4.5 stars for me, author voice is almost everything, and it will make or break a novel and my enjoyment of it. I need to hear originality and know that the author is not trying to sound or write like someone else, but is telling her story in a whole new way, whatever that story may be. I feel like I can smell a fake a mile away, and believe me I’ve read my fair share of books from authors who are ‘trying’ to emulate better, more accomplished authors. What impressed me the most here was that I thought that Pat O’Connor’s writing style has the confidence and delightful quirkiness of a much more seasoned pro… was a bit surprised to see this is her first novel. The characters had that elusive ‘flavor’ that only comes when they are fully realized and fleshed out, something that is not easily done, especially in a novel of this depth and complexity, and the prose was lyrical and lush… almost poetic at times, and authentic “YA” at other times.. Great plot that characters that are wonderfully addicting! Recommend for fans of Young Adult paranormal adventure who want something a little different that the typical teenage drama, and with a little more substance.

I have to say that I don’t normally read books like this, but I was looking for something a little out of my comfort zone and this book sounded intriguing. Well, I am most certainly glad I took the chance on Pat O’Connor’s “Secret Visions (Annie McDoogan Series Book 1)”! This was a captivating novel and very impressive for a debut. There is such strong, vivid writing, and the characters are all fascinating, flawed, and going through their own drama. GREAT character development, and everything just felt deep and “spiritual” for lack of a better word (but not overly religious, although religion plays a part) – even though some parts are dark. Dialogue, interactions, scenes, descriptions. Could use some proofing. But all in all a very good read that I’d recommend even to those who don’t normally read this sort of thing …try it, you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

to say “Secret Visions” is totally unlike anything I’ve ever read before would be an understatement! I’m not sure how to even describe this book as SO much happens, and it seems to touch on so many elements, themes, and subjects. Smooth pacing, plenty of action, and diverse characters, along with current-day issues (despite being on the paranormal side) makes this a definite winner in my eyes. I think that you need to take your time while reading it to really grasp everything the author is saying, as it will require some deeper thought and reasoning, and might even change your perspective on some things. The prose is lovely and much ‘classier’ than one normally sees in a YA novel, and at times it reads and feels more mature. But teens like to read “up” so they might appreciate this, as will older readers who want to read ‘younger’ but don’t want it dumbed down. Very interesting, and recommend to fans of literary/ paranormal/ spiritual adventure fiction.

to be fair, it does take a lot to really impress me these days….. but there were at least several times in this book that I was caught off guard and surprised, or moved by what happened. Some things were a bit predictable, but still an engaging page turner. A few minor editing things, and some conversations and scenes could have used more focus, but overall a captivating and unexpected experience. A great read with a sophisticated style of writing that some might find a bit to ‘mature’ for YA, but I thought it was a nice change of the normal types of books we see. It is different, yes, but in a good way. Great lessons to be learned here. Would love to read the next one in the series when it’s available.

I loved Pat O’Connor’s “Secret Visions”. She has captured many interesting literary angles with wonderful imagination and fantastical drama and soulful complexity. But what I loved most about the novel was the relationship between the various characters and especially what they do in moments of great challenge or adversity. Do we rise to the occasion or fail? Are we heroes or cowards? Are we loyal to the people we love most or do we betray them? What is right and what is wrong, and who really decides? What is truly important to us, and are we doing the right thing? O’Connor explores these questions with probing finesse and great heart. Great pacing and an interesting setting with an enjoyable cast of characters and some interesting twists. A definite recommended read, and I can’t wait to read book 2!

how to describe this book, other than say it is by far one of the most surprisingly interesting, original novels I’ve read in a long time! I have already loaned it to my sister to read, and my mother is after her. The author Pat O’Connor pulls us in to the story right from the beginning pages, and skillfully narrates a wide-ranging storyline full of complex and deeply emotional issues. In my opinion it really is the characters who made this story so good, each so original and conflicted in their own way, and we pull for them throughout their personal journeys and how they connect to each other and others. Love to see the impact they have on the world! So inspiring. A memorable read and a keeper for sure. Recommend for fans of YA paranormal and spiritual fiction. Would love to read more from Pat O’Connor in the future.

wow, I enjoyed this book and read the whole thing in one week, which is fast for me, especially considering I have no free time at all to read these days. But it just seemed to go by so fast and I never wanted to stop reading it, even late into the evening. I was mesmerized by the world Pat O’Connor created, one so realistic and authentic, yet clearly fantastical (unfortunately!) and extremely imaginative – and intelligent at the same time. Not an easy task! And especially harder to wrap it around a storyline that keep us on our toes… and even though I’m not a huge ‘paranormal-type’ reader, those elements added the flavor and authenticity needed to really bring the characters and story to life. Too much happens in this book to cover properly in a short review so you really just have to read it for yourself… you will not be disappointed!

4.5 stars This was the first book I’ve read by this author Pat O’Connor but I certainly hope it’s not the last (in fact, I’m ready for book 2 now!). She has a gift for writing descriptive and life-like scenes that bring the characters to life with natural sounding dialogue (important for young adults!) and good action, even if there were some parts that were slower and could have used more tension and higher stakes. I like that this book didn’t feel stale or derivative of anything I’ve ever read before. It is a hefty read that covers a lot of ground, but does so with remarkable depth. It is humorous, quirky, jaw-dropping, surprising, sad, and inspiring… all the qualities I look for in a good novel, and it delivered an emotional win. Recommend for ages 14 on up.

make no mistake, “Secret Visions” is definitely a compelling read, and one that will appeal to a wide range of readers due to its far-reaching and relevant plotlines, from friends and enemies, right and wrong, good and evil, peace and unrest… this book covers so many things, yet it all fits well together in a unique blend of mystery, action, danger, life, and drama. The story itself was fairly even-paced, but I thought the beginning was a bit slow (after the initial scene with Annie in the water) but then it picked up and flowed well. One thing I particularly liked was how we really felt like we were part of the story as it unfolded, instead of it just being “told” to us, on the outside looking in.. We feel like we are a part of the book and I recommend for fans of YA literary fiction who’d like a new twist on the genre with some deeper spiritual and philosophical insight lacking in most of today’s books.

I am of somewhat mixed feelings on this novel, “Secret Visions” by Pat O’Connor. On one hand it is brilliantly written with some of the most interesting and compelling characters I’ve read in a long time, and I liked how each of them had their own unique set of circumstances and abilities. But on the other, at times I felt almost like this book was too much at once, and seemed to lose focus of the arc and kept going off in different directions. I feel like it would have been better if it were shorter and more focused, with fewer subplots. It seemed to take a long time for any real inciting incident to happen, and there was too much telling narrative in the beginning, where we should have more engagement. But that is just my opinion, other people may disagree. But it is a good story with an original plot and interesting characters, and I can see people liking it.

"Secret Visions” by Pat O’Connor was awesome! I finished it a few weeks ago and am still digesting it. I haven’t read anything like that in a long time, if ever. For once it seemed like the characters were anything but the stock, ordinary typical hero/protagonists of YA lore, but instead all had demons, motivations, secrets, obstacles to overcome, flaws…and I don’t want to focus too much on it, but I thought the whole paranormal aspect was pretty cool too with their magical ‘powers’ – different from the norm in how it was used and portrayed, that’s for sure. Cool though. So often I read YA action/fantasy and it feels like I’m reading the same story over and over. Not there though. I like that there were several well-thought out storylines here but it doesn’t get too convoluted, and all came together to create a fresh-feeling novel that was out of the ordinary and kept me hooked throughout. I was shocked by the twist towards the end and didn’t see it coming. This appears to be the first in a series and I for one can’t wait to see what the three will do next! Recommend for teens and adults alike.

4.5 stars This book seems to have something of everything--seriously. Action, drama, friendship, struggles, mystery, paranormal elements… but I thought Pat O’Connor tied it all together nicely in just such compelling, emotionally engaging way. I was impressed by the seamless narrative transitions, and while I’m not usually a fan of dense prose with little dialogue for stretches, it didn’t bother me here much as I enjoyed the Ms. O’Connor’s skillful word-play. Always found myself reading for longer than I planned to, as there was never a good place to just “stop”. This is good too. This novel will have wide ranging appeal even though it is about some teenagers – it is intelligent and complex enough and written with enough substance and finesse to please adults as well.

From the opening pages of “Secret Visions” I knew it would be different from the books I’ve been reading lately and I was right! Ms. O’Connor sets of the scene and characters in a skillful way that not only draws us right in, but creates great visualizations (like we are watching a mini-series on TV as all the events play out)and elicits a genuine emotional investments. I truly cared about the characters’ fates, and was shocked and saddened at certain things (no spoilers). An interesting and diverse cast of characters, along with several intriguing plotlines interwoven against unique, dynamic setting makes this a memorable read for me.

Holey moley, this book was terrific! Once I started reading I didn’t want to stop until I’d finished the whole thing! It was all I could do though not to rush it—this isn’t a ‘quick-easy beach read” by any stretch, but more like something you sink back with for a while and let it take over your soul and let you mind wander with the possibilities. I enjoyed Pat O’Connor’s “voice” and style of writing. The interweaving plotlines were intelligent, well-developed and not predictable, and even though there were so many characters it seemed hard to keep track of them all (and some I didn’t think were necessary at all) I really enjoyed it! They were all genuine and interesting in their own right and well-written, and I loved the message of unity and peace, even when it comes at a price. My only real complaint was some minor editing errors. But nothing that lessened my enjoyment any, and I’d love to read more from this author in the future when the next book in the Annie McDoogan series comes out!

heads up…when starting “Secret Visions” make sure you don’t have anywhere you need to be or anything you need to do because you won’t want to stop reading until you’ve finished it all!! Trust me on this! The book starts off unforgettable beginning and just keeps going from there. The main characters are so well-developed and fully fleshed out, I felt like I knew them personally. I think what I liked the most about this book was just the overall feel the author managed to create where it felt intimate, like a close friend was telling me this really awesome story that I didn’t want to stop listening to. There are some surprising twists and some parts that really catch you off guard… but that just made the book even more amazing. The only thing that really bugged me was some editing issues, just some typos, punctuation things – nothing major, but something I noticed. But overall a great start to a promising series, and I’m ready to read the next one when it’s available. Recommend.

I really enjoyed this book, “Secret Visions” by Pat O’Connor. I thought it was excellently-written (a few minor editing things but nothing too major) and kept my attention from the shocking opening (the lead is attacked by a shark) to the satisfying (if not a tad abrupt) ending. It is a relatively quick read, one I finished in a few sittings (maybe I just didn’t want to stop reading…) but O’Connor takes her time in carefully developing the various storylines so that we the readers are thoroughly invested the whole way through. I liked Ms. O’Connors’s writing style very much, and found myself completely lost in this story, and thought there was great action and mystery… Was almost disappointed when I was done, but the ending gave the emotional satisfaction I look for in a great book and leaves the door open for more in the future. Well done.

This is an excellent novel that captured my attention from the beginning, pulled me in, and never once let go. Pat O’Connor is a talented writer who knows how to grab and keep our attention! Each scene was riveting, imaginative, and flowed smoothly from one to the next… never a “dull part” where you get bored or want to skip ahead… in fact almost the opposite with the various interweaving plotlines and going from one character and event to the next. The descriptions were very strong, and I mean with the author’s word choice… unique and powerful…. Had a very deep, spiritual, almost philosophical quality, especially for a YA book, which I found to be refreshing. I felt like I was genuinely inside the characters’ heads experiencing the world through their eyes, for better or worse. I would love to read more from this author in the future as the series continues (this is just book 1). She has a natural gift for creating a well-thought out story and developing deeply memorable characters with a great positive message. Recommend for ages 13 and up (even adults!)

"Secret Visions (Annie McDoogan Series Book 1) by Pat O’Connor is hands down one of the most original and well-crafted YA paranormal novels I’ve read in a long time! I was completely drawn in from the opening pages, and absolutely loved the author’s use of description of the different scenery and locales, and her attention to detail, especially with the characters. We feel transported not only into the various characters’ heads, but the places they are, and it was a fun escape from reality. This novel covers so, so much it’s impossible to sum up, and it was interesting to see how it all tied together but there will still be more to come. An fun literary treat, to be certain, well written and with beautiful narrative. I was really impressed and would recommend this book to fans of YA adventure/action/light fantasy. Would love to read more from Pat O’Connor in the future!
