I continue to read Santa¿s Missing Stocking by Roy Jones every year before the children are dismissed for winter break and I end story time by giving each child a miniature stocking with a chocolate santa and candy cane inside. Instead of me telling the children to always remember those less fortunate, I now ask them, ¿What do you think Santa would like us to do during the holidays?¿ Overwhelming, the majority of these young children respond with, ¿help those who do not have as much as we do.¿ Mr. Jones¿ book really offers a valuable lesson, especially to our younger generation, on leading a helping hand to those who need it.
I read this book to my 5-year-old daughter's preschool class of 24 students. Children of this age seldom sit still long enough for anything. Nonetheless, these 24 eager ones did not move and they hung onto every word that was read. At the end, I gave each child a miniture holiday stocking with candycanes inside and I asked them to remember the sweet story and to help those who are less fortunate, as Santa does. The majority said that they would and, from seeing it in their eyes, I believe they would more than even once.
