Overview

Peter Gabriel may have written "The Tower That Ate People" for Britain's Millennium Show on New Year's Eve 1999, but it also makes a whirling-dervish of an opener for the tasty, eclectic soundtrack to the Val Kilmer sci-fi thriller. Featuring guitar work by trance music pioneer and electronica wiz BT, the song appears later in the album as a remix. The voice of young soprano Emma Shapplin sizzles on the chilling "The Inferno," a hypnotic and otherworldly track that'll have you hitting the repeat button. With composer Graeme Revell (The Siege, The Insider) and a male chorus as backup, Shapplin trills "Canto XXX" in 14th-century Italian, atop pulsing dance beats. Brit DJs Different Gear offer a tame reworking of the politically-charged 1979 Police hit, "When the World Is Running Down" (a smash hit overseas). From Sting's latest album, Brand New Day, the hauntingly beautiful "A Thousand Years" is a sultry declaration of love. Tying it all together are Revell's masterfully dramatic themes, which are interwoven throughout the soundtrack. If Mars isn't like this, it ought to be.
