The John McLaughlin Trio goes into the studio and broadens its stylistic range considerably in another musically satisfying, open-minded outing. Again, McLaughlin sounds rejuvenated and refreshed in this format, as he switches between acoustic guitar and a guitar synthesizer attachment that softens and rounds his attacks while creating some luminous timbres and textures. McLaughlin's on-again, off-again Indian kick rises prominently into view here as Trilok Gurtu's role broadens into that of an all-purpose percussionist, producing some amazing sounds as backdrops. Pastorius-influenced bassist Kai Eckhardt gets downright funky on "1 Nite Stand" but gives way to the equally accomplished Dominque Di Piazza on most tracks. Yes, there is even some fantastic straight-ahead blues grooving on "Hijacked" -- if one may be permitted to use the terms guitar synthesizer and straight-ahead in the same sentence.

Years and years have passed before this recording, and many more will pass after, yet this offering will remain a legend. It begins with ''Belo Horizonte'': smooth, almost reassuring in its approximation of traditional pseudo-latin. Then slowly, with the bass leading, the tune begins to transmogrify. Softly undulating chords yield to strident acclaimations of escalating joy! Percussionist Trilok Gurtu bubbles, banters, bristles with energy! Then softness again- John plays a rapid fire melodic fragment immediately echoed by the peerless bassist Dominique Di Piazza, and the aural panorama again sweeps all before it in an unprecedented panorama of sonic passion, precision, and sensitivity. I probably shouldn't try to go much more in detail about this fantastic album- YOU SIMPLY MUST HEAR IT FOR YOURSELF!! 9 years have passed since it's release in 1992 and I still listen to this wonderful recording weekly. If you love to hear awesome musicians create and communicate, you will want to be buried with this recording when your time comes!
