Like its predecessors, Once Upon a Time and A Place in the Sun, Poolside with Slim Aarons offers images of jet-setters and the wealthy, of beautiful, glittering people living the glamorous life. Yet this new collection of stunning photographs of the rich and well-connected "doing attractive things" in their favorite playgrounds has a new twist.

The main character is pools and everything that goes with them—magnificent, suntanned bodies; well-oiled skin; bikini-clad women; yachts; summer cocktails; sumptuous buffets; spectacular locations; and most of all: fun. Poolside is not so much a Who's Who of society, aristocracy, and celebrity—although C. Z. Guest, Lilly Pulitzer, Cheryl Tiegs, Peter Beard, and many who have appeared in the previous books are here—as it is about leisure time and how the rich make use of it. This is a more intimate peek into very private lives, to which Slim Aarons was given unprecedented access in the fifties, sixties, seventies, and eighties.

From the Caribbean to Italy and Mexico to Monaco, Poolside with Slim Aarons whisks the reader away to an exclusive club where taste, style, luxury, and grandeur prevail.

I purchased 'Poolside with Slim Aarons' during the fall of last year, with the idea of holding it in reserve for a snowy, single-digit Wisconsin day when I would most need to be transported elsewhere. Such a day reared its gunmetal head this morning, and my Slim-to-the-rescue did not disappoint. Three hours passed in a heartbeat, during which time I became so viscerally immersed in the jet set world of the 60's and 70's, I could smell the Bain de Soleil. Those who were born after 1970 may not appreciate the milieu Aarons shows us, although much of the fashion has made a redux of late. 'Vogue' columnist William Norwich does an exquisite job of adding words to Aarons' images, recreating the optimism, neo-globalism, and most of all, the tranquility of the rich. He gives the reader a lot to ponder, in what could have been a shallow introduction, asking what exactly happened to the jet set? The answer is complex, and thinking about it makes me yearn for the era before cell phones and hiphop, for my gauzy caftans and old issues of 'Life' magazine. If this kind of hankering ever hits you square between the eyes, 'Poolside with Slim Aarons' may be just what you need.
