This "Step Into Reading" for level 3 is a simple retelling for beginning readers of the fateful days in A. D. 79 when Mt. Vesuvius erupted and the people in the ancient town of Pompeii perished. There are three chapters which discuss "The Sleeping Giant" and the peaceful days before the eruption, "The Giant Wakes Up" and the terrifying events of the eruption itself, and "Buried Alive" about the aftermath of the eruption, the fact that the historian Pliny saw it and wrote about it, and the archaeological findings at the site. There are a couple of references to the pagan "gods" to which the people prayed, but then Rome was still primarily a pagan society at that time. The book would be helpful for young children to use in a literature based study of world history.
