Overview

Following Brilliance Audio’s recent Grammy-nominated musical-audiobook for children, The Shoebird, starring the inimitable Jim Dale, another popular children’s title is being released just in time for the holidays: Peter and the Wolf. This beloved fairy tale, with music by Sergei Prokofiev, tells of how the courageous Peter and his animal friends — the bird, the duck, and the cat — set out to capture a ravenous wolf. Generations of children have been charmed by this enchanting work, and Brilliance Audio is proud to introduce its own version with multi-Grammy Award-winner Jim Dale as narrator. To delight the millions of Jim’s fans, his reading of Peter and the Wolf will include unforgettable vocal characterizations of the various animals, young Peter, and Peter’s grumpy old grandfather. The music of Peter and the Wolf, including some of the best-known classical melodies, is superbly performed by the award-winning Seattle Symphony, led by music director Gerard Schwarz. Children and their parents will enjoy listening to this unique musical story as every character is portrayed by a different instrument from the orchestra and the story is woven together by the lively narration by Jim Dale. It’s a perfect holiday gift and a must-have for all Jim dale fans!

The description of this edition of 'Peter and the Wolf' on the Barnes & Noble website especially appealed to me on account of the reference to an introductory illustration showing each of the characters with his corresponding (musical) instrument, a feature I was especially intent on finding for my purpose of educating my young grandchildren. Having now received the book I ordered, however, I am disappointed that there was no introductory illustration nor images of any of the musical instruments that are a key feature of this enchanting story, though the illustrations are otherwise very pleasing.

Raschka does it again, with his undeniably beautiful illustrations, clever dialogue, and unique interpretation of Sergei Prokofiev's classic story set to music. Children and grown-ups alike will find this book a must-have for the classroom, an accompaniment to the music of Prokofiev's "Peter and the "Wolf", and will enjoy the book for it's originality and playful approach to learning about orchestral instruments, mood, and characters. The setting is like a cut-out stage, allowing children to both connect to the themes of story-telling through theatre and orchestration, and embrace the story on their own level. Raschka is known for his delightful books, introducing children to the great musical artists of our time in an innovative way-this is no exception!

Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf is reworked visually and narratively by Chris Raschka. The book makes a good read-aloud with many parts, fun repetition and interesting word sequences. Children will especially enjoy the 3-dimensional miniatures that Raschka created.

This book is about Peter, a little boy who tries to save a duck, cat, and bird from a dangerous wolf. The illustrations were nice, not very bright. I did not quite enjoy this fairy tale as much as others I have read.

This is such a classic story. It would have been nice if the illustrations were more child friendly.

This story is a must for any parent who reads to their child. It is a great way to introduce classical music and the instruments of the orchestra to children. I read this to my two year old son every night and he is not afraid of the big bad wolf.

We loved this wondeful version of Peter and the Wolf! The reviewer who gave it only one star must not have flipped the tape over because it sure played for more than 10 minutes. Peter and the 'ferocious' Wolf . . . we enjoyed it tremendously!

We love this story and have 3 different Peter and the Wolf books. My daughter who is 3-1/2 loves this one the best.
