In an attempt to make sense of his own mysterious and unsettling childhood memories, a man begins to reconstruct his past. As the games and adventures of his youth become engulfed by a larger story, he finds that it forms a tapestry of unbelievable horror that he never could have expected.

Each chapter completes a different piece of the puzzle for both you and the narrator, and by the end of it all, you will wish that you could forget what he never knew.

Penpal 4.3 out of 5 based on 0 ratings. 66 reviews.

I have to admit that Penpal was a little awkwardly written in places and sometimes the actions and thoughts of the kid don't quite jive with his age and what kids his age would actually be like. With that said, this is the best book I've read in a long time. The reason being the storyline as well as the fact that it is not the cookie-cutter plot that other books fall into. I could not put it down, read it in one day and then immediately went searching for an internet forum to discuss it in. Bottom line is that it's a deliciously creepy read.

Extremely entertaining, and quite addictive. Really creepy and quite disturbing at places. Hope this book gets more attention!

This was an excellent book. It is quite short so I was able to finish it in one night, but long enough to tell the whole story. There were several sentences that made me gasp out loud. I would love to see this turned into a movie! Absolutely terrifying.

Wow! Just finished the book and my heart is still racing. I have never been so terrified in all my life and I am a horror junkie. No this is not your typical horror novel with monsters and demons, Oh no this is something that will stay with you for a long time something that is just indescribable. I don't know what genre this books falls under but I love it! I have never cried while reading a book but this one did it I was almost balling! Dathan took the phrase "I feel like I am being watched", and took it to another disgustingly horrifying level

I was prepared to really like this book. I love Reddit and the boards for scary stories but this was awful. It wasn't very cohesive and in the end it becomes very clear that 90% of this book is fluff and filler that's unnecessary for the story. The ending lacks any punch.... it's not scary or surprising and, really, doesn't make much sense. Some may disagree of course.... but I think anybody who has spent time around children would agree that the thoughts and actions of the kindergarten age main characters were pretty unrealistic. And what parent allows their 5 year old to play alone in the woods (woods that circle a big lake) all day? It was just odd and could have done with better editing or research.

I was a bit disappointed. I read the reviews and so decided to try it. I feel a bit let down by the author regarding the ending. I felt that he was building up to a different result therefore was unhappy with his choice of ending. It was almost a cop-out ending. He also had a few lingering story lines that we never got answers too.

So.. I liked this book but I didn't love the end. It leaves me scratching my head going "huh?". It did wrap up the story but it felt rushed and bare minimum.. I had a lot of questions about it but overall id give it a 3.5. It was not really scary but sorta "look over your shoulder" ish? I would love it more if I understood it better... like why did this all happen.. and why J and not the main boy? And what about Mrs. Maggie? Hmm...

I am amazed at all the glowing reviews. The story is so bogged down by over-writing, and written in a style sounding like that of 1930's. There is a kernal of a good short that is painfully dragged out to novel length. The majority of the material is boring.

I guess I'm fairly tough to please. I really want to like books and movies but I'm usually disappointed. It seems as though they put all the good stuff in the sample or, in the case of movies, in the trailer. Not this time. This book was awesome. I did kinda wish he hadn't jumped back and forth so much. I understand flashbacks but he jumped from the age of 6 to 10, then back to 6, then he was a teenager then back to 6. It was mildly annoying. Around 155 pages, no outright violence, very little swearing. I recommend with all sincerity.

Wow. Just wow. I'm still thinking about Penpal two days after finishing it (and finished it only one day after starting). Be warned, it's so frightening, you may regret finding out what really happened to this kid, just like he did. My first thought after putting it down was "I need to read something funny right now!" I can't give it five stars due to several gaping plot holes. Unfortunately, the boy's mother makes several decisions that I think no parent would understand, including hiding crucial information from her son. The author should have done some editing in regards to her character, because she's not very sympathetic, even considering the horrible events that took place. However, I was so caught up in this freaky story that I was willing to suspend disbelief for a few hours. Read it if you dare. And no, I didn't read this on Reddit.

Holds your attention from the first few pages and doesn't let go. Not even at the end! Great short read

No joke....this is the first book in almost 30 years I've read that spooked me! And I've read them all....King, Koontz, Barker, etc. I'm only on page 80. Hopefully it keeps up this pace.

I feel as if I know the characters personally. Tragic as well.

A very creepy coming of age story. The main characters are fleshed out, and you really feel for them. Excellent story.

This is a fast, suspensful, psychologically horrifying story. I enjoyed the first person narrative of the main character as it varied from age five up to adulthood.
