In Papá and Me, a young boy and his papa may speak both Spanish and English, but the most important language they speak is the language of love. In this beautiful bilingual picture book, Arthur Dorros portrays the close bond between father and son, with lush paintings by Rudy Gutierrez. Good book. I think there is some cultural insight and great illustrations.
This is a wonderful picture book to introduce some Spanish words, or for Spanish-speaking children who are learning English but want some familiar words. The text is about a Latino father and son who share a wonderful day together from making pancakes to splashing in puddles and visiting grandparents. Spanish words are interspersed within the text, but the meanings are repeated (or can be guessed based on context) in the English. The color pastel illustrations by Rudy Gutierrez almost steal the show. They are filled with color, joy, movement, and imagination. An overwhelmingly positive book depicting Latinos and father-son interactions. Great for young kids, but also suitable for older ones (especially learners of an additional language), ages 5+.
